A forest nursery was inaugurated in Kohima Forest Colony by PCCF & HoFF, I. Panger Jamir IFS in presence of APCCF, M.M. Ngullie IFS on 20th February 2019. DFO Kohima, Rongsenlemla Imchen, IFS and Pezaneinuo RO Kohima Range. DFO Kohima said the nursery was constructed in January 2019 to raise saplings through root trainers and that for this year the saplings will be distributed in bare rooted form in carton boxes to minimize the use of plastics within and outside the nursery.
PCCF & HoFF highlighted on the importance of using biodegradable containers for raising saplings in the nurseries and appreciated that such an initiative will have a durable impact in future in order to decrease the use of polybags. APCCF also said that though costly and labor intensive an alternative to polybags should be encouraged to fulfill the objectives of the department. R O Kohima stress on the importance of raising economically viable indigenous species which can boost the livelihood status. The Kohima Central Nursery has a capacity of around 60,000 saplings and with the addition of the new nursery it is aim to lessen the pressure of seedling demand.
