The Gorkha Public Panchayat, Kohima, in association with various Gorkha NGOs, clubs and Jatiya Sansthas, observed Balidan Diwas 2026 (Martyrs’ Day) at the Multi-Utility Hall, Gorkha Public Panchayat Complex, Chandmari, Kohima on August 25.
The programme was organised in remembrance of Shaheed Major Durga Malla and Shaheed Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse, honouring their courage, patriotism and selfless service to the nation. Deputy Commissioner, Kohima, B. Henok Buchem, NCS, attended the programme as the Chief Guest, while Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Cooperation Department, Nagaland, Bharati Chhinal, was the Guest of Honour.
In his special address, B. Henok Buchem said Martyrs’ Day was not merely an occasion for remembrance but also a day for reflection, gratitude and renewed commitment. He said the freedom, peace and opportunities enjoyed today have come through the sacrifices of countless brave men and women who placed duty and the nation before personal interest.
He said the sacrifices of the martyrs remind people of courage, commitment and selfless service, and should inspire citizens to reflect on their contribution to society and the nation.
The Deputy Commissioner highlighted the Gorkha community’s long tradition of courage, discipline, loyalty and service to the nation, saying the contribution of Gorkhas to the defence and security of the country is a source of pride. He also acknowledged their contributions to the social, cultural and economic life of Nagaland and Kohima.
Referring to Kohima’s historical significance, Buchem said the Battle of Kohima remains one of the defining battles of the Second World War and the land bears witness to extraordinary courage and sacrifice.
He emphasised that patriotism is expressed not only on the battlefield but also through everyday service to society. Calling upon the younger generation to draw inspiration from the martyrs, he stressed the need to cultivate discipline, integrity, compassion, courage and respect for fellow citizens.
He said the strongest tribute to those who sacrificed their lives is to build a peaceful, responsible, inclusive and just society. He appreciated the Gorkha Public Panchayat for organising the programme and highlighted the role of community organisations in preserving history and passing values from one generation to the next.
Buchem called upon all to renew their commitment to unity, peace, communal harmony and service to the nation, and work towards Kohima and Nagaland where every community lives with dignity, mutual respect and a shared sense of responsibility.
Guest of Honour, Bharati Chhinal, in her address, paid tribute to Shaheed Major Durga Malla and Shaheed Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse, stating that although the two heroes belonged to different generations and served the nation in different circumstances, their lives conveyed the common values of courage, duty, discipline, responsibility and selfless service.
She said the sacrifices of the martyrs should inspire the younger generation to become responsible, honest and compassionate citizens and contribute meaningfully to the progress of the country. She also acknowledged the sacrifices and support of the families of the martyrs.
In his welcome address, President, Gorkha Public Panchayat, Kohima, Santu Thapa, welcomed the dignitaries, community leaders, representatives of various organisations, student representatives and invitees. He said the occasion was a solemn reminder of the courage, dedication and selfless service of those who made the supreme sacrifice for the security, peace and unity of the nation.
Father of Shaheed Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse, Neisielie Kenguruse, expressed gratitude to the Gorkha community for continuing to remember his son and the family. He recalled the sacrifice made by his son in the service of the nation and encouraged the younger generation to study hard and work towards achieving their goals. He also urged parents to guide their children with care and perseverance.
The programme commenced with Deep Prajwalan, with a ceremonial lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest, Guest of Honour and dignitaries, followed by Sarandjali, a solemn tribute to the martyrs. A welcome song was presented by the children of the GPPK Summer Camp 2026. The programme also featured a special performance by Karishma Baraily. Advisor, Gorkha Public Panchayat, Kohima, Ranjeet Lama, delivered the words of gratitude.
