DC & DEO Peren, Vineet Kumar has informed all concerned that as per Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the campaigning period for General Election to the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly 2023 shall come to end w.e.f 4:00 PM - 25/02/2023 and that there is a prohibition of public meeting during forty-eight hours ending with the hour fixed for conclusion of poll.
No person shall:
- Convene, hold or attend, join or address any public meeting or procession in connection with an election; or
- Display to the public any election matter using a cinematograph, television, or other similar apparatus; or
- Propagate any election matter to the public by holding, or by arranging the holding of, any musical concert or theatrical performance, or any other entertainment or amusement to attract the members of the public.
Any person who contravenes this provision shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term that may extend up to two years, a fine, or with both.
Further, because after the closure of the campaign period, no campaign can take place within the constituency, the presence of political functionaries/party workers/procession functionaries/campaign functionaries, etc who have been brought from outside the constituency and who are not voters of the constituency should not continue as their continued presence after campaign ends may undermine the atmosphere for a free and fair poll.
However, the said restriction may not be insisted upon the office bearer of the political party who is in charge of the State Headquarters, and his movement during the period in question shall remain confined normally between his party office and the place of his stay.
