The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) held its 39th Convocation on April 7, 2026, with ceremonies conducted simultaneously across 49 regional centres, including the Kohima Regional Centre at State Academy Hall, Kohima. Rupin Sharma, Director General of Police, Nagaland, attended the Kohima event as the Guest of Honour.
At the IGNOU headquarters in New Delhi, Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan graced the occasion as Chief Guest. A total of 2,99,092 learners from across the country and abroad were conferred degrees, diplomas, and certificates upon successful completion of their programmes.
DGP in his address stated that IGNOU has attained a significant milestone in the realm of imparting education and has played a vital role for the less privileged which has provided opportunity to everyone.
Sharing his experiences, he mentioned that IGNOU provides quality study materials and courses, which are more than satisfactory. He added that it was a privilege to be part of IGNOU, a community that encourages learning, sharing, and passing knowledge to future generations. He also noted that many people in the past could not pursue college or higher studies due to their circumstances, but later realize the importance of education. He added that IGNOU plays an important role in filling this gap by providing opportunities for those who wish to continue their education.
Sharma stressed that degree is not the end of learning rather it is beginning, a channel which sorts to keep oneself focused in a particular direction. He further congratulated all the graduates and wished them success in their careers.
Assistant Regional Director IGNOU, Kohima, Dr. Mayonmi Shimray in his welcome address, informed that the IGNOU Regional Centre, Kohima was established on 14th December 2000 to cater and reach out to the unreached especially to those who could not afford to study in regular institution, working people etc. in the state. He added that since its inception, the centre has made continuous efforts to reach people across the state and provide education to all, irrespective of caste, greed, religion, age etc. IGNOU offers its academic programmes in compliance with National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The programmes/courses offered are multidisciplinary and holistic in nature and many programmes/courses provide multiple entry and exit, he said.
He stressed that, with an aim to spread education with the populace of the state, IGNOU Regional Centre, Kohima has established 16 study centres in all the districts of the state in colleges, institutions etc. and as of date, the Regional Centre, Kohima offers more than hundred programmes starting from certificates programme to Post Graduate Programme.
A total of 801 eligible candidates received their certificates under the Kohima Regional Centre convocation.
