The Office of the District Economics & Statistics Officer, Kohima, organised a programme for distribution of IT equipment and launching of Aadhaar enrolment for children (0–5 years) at the District Economics & Statistics Office, Kohima, on 22nd April 2026.

Secretary & Chief Registrar of Births & Deaths, Akunu Meyase, IAS, handed over the IT Equipments to the representatives of the selected villages. She also addressed the gathering and underscored the importance of accurate and timely registration of vital events. She stated that since 2022, registration has been mandated to be conducted online, with the goal of achieving a fully digital system. She highlighted that birth and death records are the most critical legal documents establishing an individual’s existence and identity, and stressed that absence of such records could lead to lack of legal recognition.

Meyase further stated that reliable data from civil registration forms the basis for government planning and policy-making. As part of the programme, IT equipments including computers, printers, and internet connectivity support were distributed to selected villages to facilitate online registration. A total of 26 villages from Kohima district and 10 villages from Tseminyu district were covered under the initiative.

She called upon all stakeholders to work collectively towards strengthening the system and ensuring complete transition to online registration, while encouraging continuous learning and cooperation in the process.

Director & Additional Chief Registrar of Births & Deaths, Nagaland, Neidilhou Keditsu, in his address, stated that the programme was organised to strengthen the system of civil registration in the state. He informed that Nagaland adopted online registration of births and deaths in 2022, in line with national standards, with support from UIDAI through the provision of enrolment units and equipment. While appreciating the efforts of registrars, particularly from Kohima and Tseminyu districts, he noted that registration of deaths remains low and called for collective efforts to achieve 100 percent universal registration.

Keditsu also stressed the importance of suo moto registration and urged registrars to work with sincerity and efficiency by referring to the official manuals. He emphasised the need for harmonisation in data collection and elaborated on the process of Aadhaar enrolment for children, including the required documentation. He reiterated that achieving the desired outcomes would require coordinated efforts from all stakeholders.

Deputy Commissioner, Kohima, B. Henok Buchem, NCS, who also serves as the District Chief Registrar of Births & Deaths, launched the Aadhaar enrollment for children (0–5 years), marking a significant step towards strengthening identity registration in the district. In his address, the Deputy Commissioner emphasised that governance begins at the village level and called upon village leaders to take responsibility in ensuring proper enumeration during the upcoming census. He noted that while the 2011 census recorded minimal population growth, the forthcoming census must be carried out with greater accuracy. He informed that the first phase of the census will begin in July, covering all households across both rural and urban areas.

Highlighting the importance of Aadhaar, he stated that it has become mandatory for availing various government schemes, including health insurance and welfare benefits. He urged the village leaders present representing 26 villages under Kohima district and 10 villages under Tseminyu district to create awareness within their communities and encourage enrolment, particularly for those who are yet to obtain Aadhaar.

Earlier, chairing the programme, District Economics & Statistics Officer and District Registrar of Births and Deaths, Kohima, Theyieneinuo Belho highlighted the significance of strengthening registration systems at the grassroots level.

The programme was held under the theme “Secure Your Child’s Future with Aadhaar – Baal Aadhaar: A Unique Identity for Every Little One.” It was informed that for enrolment of Aadhaar for children in the 0–5 years age group, the required documents include the digitised birth certificate of the child and the Aadhaar number of either parent.
