The 80th Independence Day was celebrated with grand pomp and patriotic fervour at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex in Mokokchung on 15th August 2026.

Metsubo Jamir, Minister for Rural Development (RD) and State Institute of Rural Development (SIRD), Government of Nagaland, graced the occasion as the Special Guest. Upon his arrival, the national song was played. The Minister then unfurled the National Flag and took the Rashtriya salute from the marching parade contingents, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. He also delivered the Independence Day speech.

To mark the special day, the Minister handed out the District Commendation Awards to nine individuals. These citizens were recognized for their exceptional dedication, outstanding achievements, innovation, leadership, and meaningful service to the Mokokchung district and its people.

The impressive march past was commanded by Zareni Yanthan, NPS (Asstt. Commandant, 2nd NAP Bn. Alichen), with ABI Tekatemjen SM (RHQ Mokokchung) as the second-in-command. The Band Party from the 12th Assam Rifles provided the musical rhythm for 11 diverse contingents.

The marching contingents included: DEF Mokokchung, 2nd NAP Bn. Alichen, Home Guards, Mokokchung, Ex-Servicemen, NCC, Fazl Ali College, NCC, PM Shri MGHSS, Scouts & Guides, QMHSS, Jubilee Memorial School, Scouts & Guides, Sumi GHS, Scouts & Guides N.I. Jamir GHSS, Mokokchung District BS&G.

Following the formal proceedings, the Special Guest inaugurated the exhibition stalls set up by various government departments. The celebration also featured vibrant, colourful cultural dances and performances by the Mangmetong Cultural Club, the Gorkha Union Mokokchung, and Longtrok Senden Ungma.

The evening session brought sports excitement to the stadium with an exhibition football match played between the DC XI and SP XI, alongside a thrilling penalty shootout event. The historic 80th Independence Day celebrations in Mokokchung concluded beautifully with the traditional Beating of the Retreat ceremony.
