The North Eastern Council (NEC), under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), Government of India, celebrated the 80th Independence Day with great patriotic fervour and enthusiasm at the NEC Secretariat, Nongrim Hills, Shillong, on 15th August 2026.

The Independence Day celebration was led by the Secretary, NEC, and was attended by officers and staff members of the NEC Secretariat.

The programme commenced with the assembly of officers and staff at the NEC Secretariat. At 8:00 A.M, the National Flag was hoisted, followed by the National Anthem and an address by the Secretary, NEC.

As part of the spirit of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, officers and staff actively participated in various Tiranga-related activities, promoting the message of patriotism and national unity. Activities undertaken at NEC included hoisting of the Tiranga at residential premises, uploading selfies with the Tiranga on the Har Ghar Tiranga portal, registration as Tiranga volunteers, participating in rallies and events, illuminating office buildings in the colour of the Tricolour, procuring and distributing flags, displaying the Tiranga Exhibition curated by the Ministry of Culture, and disseminating of information through social media and the NEC website.

The Har Ghar Tiranga initiative at the NEC Secretariat reinforced the message of "Tiranga - Our Pride, Our Identity", while encouraging greater public participation in celebrating the spirit of India's Independence and strengthening the bonds of national unity and integration.

The celebrations concluded with light refreshments. The Independence Day programme at the NEC Secretariat reflected the Council's unwavering commitment to the values of unity, patriotism, public service and the continued development of the North Eastern Region.
