Governor of Nagaland, Nand Kishore Yadav accompanied by Commissioner & Secretary to Governor, Thavaseelan K. IAS, Fiirhesie Nyuwi, and other officials visited Longwa Village at Mon district on 18th August 2026. He was received by the Deputy Commissioner, Mon, Wennyei Konyak, NCS, Superintendent of Police, MP Rajya Sabha, Phangnon Konyak, Advisor, Konngam Konyak and Tonyei Konyak, the Chief Angh of Longwa at COB Longwa 42 Assam Rifles helipad, Mon District.
Addressing the people at Longwa Chief Angh’s Residence, the Governor said that it was a privilege to interact and be with the people of Konyak community. The Governor mentioned that the recent disaster at Mon has caused immense suffering and hardship where lives were lost, and the district suffered an extensive damage. On behalf of the people of Nagaland, he conveyed deepest condolences to all the bereaved families.
He also stated that the recent disaster has reminded everyone of the vulnerability of the State to extreme weather events. Heavy rainfall, flash floods and landslides can cause enormous destruction within a very short period. Their impact extends far beyond physical damage.
The Governor expressed his appreciation to the District Administration, NSDMA, SDRF, Police security forces, line departments, civil society organisations, churches, youth organisations and volunteers who responded with courage and dedication. Their efforts in search and rescue, evacuation, relief and restoration demonstrated the strength of the people’s collective response.
He also commended the people of Mon and the Konyak community for standing together during this difficult time and said that the spirit of community solidarity, compassion and mutual assistance is one of Nagaland's greatest strengths.
He reminded that while immediate relief and rescue are essential, the next and equally important task is rehabilitation and reconstruction. The Government and the people should work together must restore the district and help families rebuild their homes and livelihood. The restoration of roads and other infrastructures damaged by the recent disaster must be put into focus.
He also added that future infrastructure must be designed with greater consideration for such extreme natural disasters and also reminded the people the importance of respecting nature. Development and environmental protection must go hand in hand.
He appealed to the people to follow building regulations, land-use norms and technical advice, particularly in vulnerable areas. He also said that natural disasters cannot always be prevented. But through preparedness, planning and timely action, the government along with the public can significantly reduce their impact. He encouraged the people to identify vulnerable natural disaster-prone areas, and for them to respond promptly to official warnings and advisories.
He encouraged the youth of Mon to become active partners in disaster preparedness because young people play an important role in generating awareness, communication, evacuation and community support. The experience of the recent disaster should become an opportunity to strengthen the disaster-management systems from the village level upwards.
The Governor further stated that the Konyak community has been known for its courage, resilience, strong community bonds and deep respect for its traditions. These qualities are particularly important at a time when the community is facing the challenges of disaster and recovery. He appealed to the people to transform this difficult experience into a renewed commitment to rebuild better, safer and stronger district and to ensure that development reaches every community while respecting the environment and cultural heritage.
While assuring that both the Central and State Governments will continue to extend all possible support for relief, restoration and rehabilitation, the Governor reminded the people that a truly resilient Mon will be built through a strong partnership between the Government, local institutions and the people.
Konyak Union President, Yamao Konyak expressed his gratitude to the Governor and his team for their visit, and gave a brief note on the loss and damages caused by the landslide and flood on 19th July 2026. Konyak Students’ Union (KSU)President, Temwang Konyak, in his short speech stated that 7 Schools and 318 students were affected by the recent landslide and flood.
The Chief Angh of Longwa Village, Tonyei Konyak appreciated the Governor and his team for their visit. In his vote of thanks, he mentioned that one of the biggest challenges would be rebuilding the infrastructure of Longwa Village, therefore he requested the government for road upgradation.
