The State Level Teacher’s Day celebration 2026 organised by the Department of School Education was celebrated at Local Ground (Khuochiezie), Kohima on 5th September 2026.
Advisor for School Education, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome was the Special Guest for the celebration. While conveying his Teacher’s Day greeting, the Advisor noted that when Nagaland got its statehood in 1963, the literacy rate was at 21.95% percentage, but today the 2025 data showed a rise of 95.7% placing Nagaland as the third most literate state in the country. He therefore, congratulated and thanked the 32,714 teachers serving in both government and private schools for this milestone. He described teaching as a noble profession as teachers have no distinction amongst the students when it comes to showing love and care for the children.
Yhome called upon the teachers to prepare the Gen Z and Gen Alpha children for leadership roles as these children will be handling the public affairs and the affairs of government as well as the private sector by 2035 and stated that the state school ecosystem is implementing to transform our schools through basically three pillars of Infrastructure, Human Resource Management and Curriculum Designs. Addressing these issues, he illustrated that Infrastructure challenges can be addressed through developmental projects, while Human Resource Management can be improved through teachers' training, communication between schools and field officers and the directorate to improve administration and governance, and the school systems through their School Teacher Systems.
Addressing on Curriculum Designs, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome highlighted that the Government will be introducing world-class education systems into our classrooms through curriculum designs through new innovative approaches to understand and create skill set for the children. Calling upon the students he said, there are times when we do not appreciate ourselves, but must understand that we have the potential to produce excellence not only within ourselves, but to reach the national level as well as international level and become champions. Yhome expressed that the government vision is to produce our Gen Z, Gen Alva and Gen Beta to become world class.
Delivering the welcome address, Commissioner & Secretary School Education & SCERT, Asangla Imti, IAS extended Teachers’ Day greetings and emphasized to reflect on the actual role of a teacher and asserted that a good teacher is not only to impart education or knowledge but also values, foster critical thinking and help a young man mitigate the challenges of life. She said their influence goes beyond the classes, shaping characters and changing the place and growth of a society. She also extended her gratitude to the teachers for their worthy edification, and encouraged them to continue with their dedication as an educator. She also congratulated the 12 state teacher’s awardees 2026.
The 12 teachers from 5 districts were awarded State Teachers’ Award 2026 during the celebration. The Awardees were Vika S Sumi from GHS, Sitimi Kiphire; Albert Tungo from GHS, Forest Colony Kohima; Mhasikholie Sachu from TMGHSS Kohima; Kezhalezo Solo from GHS PWD Colony Kohima; C. Pangjei Keikung from GHS Yachem Longleng; Nirmal Sarkar from BGHSS, Longleng; Longrimendang from GHS Mangmetong Mokokchung; S. Hongen Thangti Chang from Shamator A, Shamator; Newkai from GHSS Shamator; P. Thsangtsumong Yimchunger from GHSS Shamator; Hitilo Kath from GHSS Tseminyu; and Imnajungla from Little Star Hr. Secondary School Dimapur.
School Safety Excellency Award 2026, as part of Nagaland Disaster Management School Safety Policy Compliance Course were also awarded to Nukshitemjen, PT GHS Kubulong Mokokchung and Wanglem W Konyak, PT Scout Master, Holy Angels School Tizit Town, Mon.
The celebration featured singing of the National Anthem by the students of GHS New Secretariat Phezoucha and presentation of songs by students of GHSS Sechu Zubza, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Kohima and Mt. Hermon Higher Secondary School Kohima. Teachers were honoured by the students of Bethel Higher Secondary School, Kohima with gifts and the Life Sketch of Lt. Dr. S. Radhakrishnan was recited by the students of GMS Officers Hills, Kohima.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Additional Director, Department of School Education, Deenabandhu Panda, while the program was compared by Sherinlo Keppen, UGHT, GMS Tsuuma and Kikruneinuo Liezietsu, GT, GHS Bayavu.
