The Inter-Department Badminton Club Kohima (IDBCK), in collaboration with the District Administration, Kohima, will organise the sixth edition of the Inter-Department Badminton Tournament 2026 on September 11 and 12 at the NLA Stadium, Kohima.
Speaking during the press briefing at DC Office Kohima on 11th August 2026, President of IDBCK, Er. Sabou Yashü, said the club has been organising the tournament annually since 2020 and that the event has grown into a successful platform for badminton enthusiasts and government employees.
He informed that the tournament would feature four categories, namely Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, Mixed Doubles, and 50+, Legislators, Ex-Legislators and Retirees’ Doubles. He invited badminton enthusiasts and players from various departments and institutions to participate in the tournament.
Yashü expressed gratitude to the District Administration, Kohima, for collaborating with the club in organising this year’s edition and said the collaboration would further encourage participation and strengthen the spirit of sportsmanship among employees.
Deputy Commissioner, Kohima, B. Henok Buchem, NCS, said the District Administration had agreed to collaborate with the tournament as part of efforts to further strengthen cooperation and participation among government employees.
He said the tournament brings together officers and staff from various departments and provides them with an opportunity to promote physical fitness, teamwork, camaraderie and a spirit of healthy competition.
He encouraged employees from various departments to come forward and participate enthusiastically, expressing hope that the tournament would be exciting, successful and memorable. He also appreciated the IDBCK for its continued efforts in promoting badminton and sportsmanship among government employees and thanked the media for its continued support in giving greater visibility to the initiative.
General Secretary of IDBCK, Kekhreisetuo Ziephrü, said the upcoming event would be the sixth edition. Explaining the objective behind the initiative, Ziephrü said government employees are generally confined to their daily assigned responsibilities and routine office work. The tournament, he said, was conceived to provide a platform where employees could take a break from their usual routines, come together, build camaraderie and nurture a spirit of sportsmanship.
He added that the tournament also provides an opportunity for employees from different departments to meet, interact, share concerns and exchange constructive ideas, thereby building bonds of friendship and cooperation that can continue beyond the sporting event.
Ziephrü said the tournament would carry total prize money of Rs. 1 lakh and urged players from various government departments, institutions, banks and other organisations to participate in the sixth edition.
Recalling the first edition, he said the tournament initially attracted around 102 participants from various departments, although three teams could not participate, leaving 99 departments represented. He added that participation in subsequent editions has generally averaged around 70 to 75 departments.
