A one-day awareness programme on Scope & Importance of Bee, Beekeeping & Honey initiated by Nagaland Beekeeping & Honey Mission (NBHM) in collaboration with Central Institute Horticulture (CIH) Midziphema, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare was held at Sanis town under Wokha District on 5th November 2021. The objective of the programme is to encourage and motivate the farmers on income generation and crop productivity and production through bee pollinating services. The programme targets on quality control of honey and marketing strategy

Advisor, Horticulture & Border Affairs, Mhathung Yanthan said Nagaland Beekeeping & Honey Mission (NHBM) has come a long way since its inception way back in 2007. And expressed his happiness that the intention of the state government, the purpose for which the focused mission (NHBM) is lunched has achieved many laurels under its belt, which he urged the mission to keep it up.

He also thanked the NHBM for venturing into new activities broom and mushroom cultivation, in the form of giving livelihood support to the beekeepers and also to the community. He said that beekeeping is not very popular in this area which he is representing now and added that during his day as the team leader of NHBM he has encouraged the area people for beekeeping but people were not that receptive but expressed his happiness that people has realized its importance.

Mhathung, said bee keeping, is crucially important for agriculture well-being of our state, the natural biological interdependence that comes from bee pollination and production of seeds be it agriculture, horticulture or other forestry produce largely depends on availability of bee in large scale. A state like Nagaland, which is rural based agrarian economy has a large scope on beekeeping or apiculture and urged the trainees to protect and preserve the practice.

He also thanked the nodal department for conducting such awareness programme and urged the trainees to be actively involved and shared their experiences to others.

Commissioner  & Secretary to Governor of Nagaland and Team Leader NHBM, T. Mhabemo Yanthan, while delivering the key note address said, sustaining the economy of the rural people is very important in any kind of society for that matter for any government of the day. He said that the potential of beekeeping that will support and sustained the economy of the rural population was conceived by the then team leader of the NHBM and present Advisor of Horticulture, Mhathung Yanthan in 2007 and currently, the nodal department is doing a fantastic job and some of its activities in recent time. The department received the National Award in wild honey and mushroom cultivation under the ministry of tribal affairs, under van Dhan Vikas Kendra (VDVK), he added.

Altogether, seventy (70) beekeepers and horticulture farmers from fifteen (15) villages under Sanis division attended the awareness training programme.
