WORLD SOIL DAY OBSERVED AT KOHIMA
Joining with the rest of the world, Nagaland also celebrated the World Soil Day under the theme "Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor and Manage" 2024 at the state Capital, Kohima on the 5th December 2024.
Observing the program, the Central Water Commission (CWC) Member, A.S Goel flagged off the van with the important message of the World Soil Day at the Hotel Jafü in the presence of Director, Soil & Water Conservation, L. Chubaonen. The CWC members and the participants also read out the World Soil Day Pledge, administered by the Director.
Congratulating the department for organising the program, Goel urged the people to remember the vital soil plays in sustaining life on Earth. He stated that it is the responsibility of everyone to unite together, commit to protecting and nurturing our soil for a healthier and more sustainable future.
The main purpose of the program is to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and advocate for the sustainable management of soil resources in ensuring soil Biodiversity and improving soil health, reducing erosion and pollution, enhancing water filtration and storage, achieving sustainable and resplendent agri food system, and contributing to Carbon sequestration.
The theme for World Soil Day 2024 is to underscores the importance of accurate soil data and information in understanding soil characteristics and support informed decision making on sustainable soil management for food security.
During the annual program, the department highlighted some important World Soil Day messages across the world with their activities under Soil Health and Fertility of RKVY. As per the activities message, a total of 1,67,904 Soil Health Cards have been issued by the department since 2019.
Marking the day, the department has distributed pamphlets in various locations like Hornbill Festival, Kisama, High School Junction, Razhü Point, Secretary Junction, PHQ junction and T.C.P Gate.
A separate program of World Day Soil Day was also conducted at the conference hall of the Directorate of Soil & Water Conservation with their officers and staff. Addressing the program, the Director, L.Chubaonen in his speech said that the day serves as a reminder of the indispensable role that soil plays in our lives. He called upon the gathering to make a moment to reflect on the achievements we have made in promoting soil health and the work that still lies ahead.
Reflecting on the year's theme, Chubaonen encouraged everyone to recognize that caring for our soils is a shared responsibility that transcends borders. He said that our actions today will determine the health of our soils for generations to come. He said that by measuring, monitoring, and managing our soils wisely, we are not just protecting an essential resource but it is investing in our collective future. Therefore, he urged everyone to take action through advocacy, education, or adopting sustainable practices in their own lives and also apprised the people to contribute and care for soils.
The program was chaired by the Joint Director, Rotilo Kent and was attended by the officers and staff, while the vote of thanks was delivered by ASCO, Kihika.
