The inauguration programme of new academic facilities at PM SHRI Government High School (GHS), New Market, Kohima, was held with the participation of community members and stakeholders.
The programme marked the inauguration of the Atal Tinkering Lab, Science Lab, ICT/Computer Lab, Library Room and Vocational Lab by the Chief Guest, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, Advisor, School Education and SCERT, aimed at strengthening the school’s learning infrastructure and enhancing students’ academic development.
In his address, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome acknowledged the contributions of the community, including the Panchayat, SMDC, GBs and well-wishers, for their continued support. He stated that the land for the school, measuring around 24,000 sq. ft., was purchased through community initiative, reflecting collective commitment towards the institution.
Appreciating the leadership of the headmaster and the dedication of the teaching staff, he noted that the school has maintained its academic activities since its upgradation to a high school in 2016. He also pointed to an increase in enrolment, including students transferring from private institutions, indicating improved confidence in government schools.
The Advisor emphasised the need to strengthen the education system and informed that efforts are underway to redesign the school ecosystem in the state. He stated that the proposed Nagaland School Standards Authority would help regulate and ensure quality across both government and private schools.
Highlighting key reforms, he stated that the focus would be on infrastructure development, improved governance, and strengthening curriculum and pedagogy through structured teacher training and leadership development. He also underscored the importance of community involvement and called for collective efforts to improve basic facilities such as approach roads and ensure student safety within school premises.
Guest of Honour, MLA, Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhütso, in his address stated that with the improvement of facilities in government schools, efforts are being made to make public education the preferred choice for parents. He noted that teachers in government schools are selected through established processes and are well-qualified to guide students.
He encouraged students to make full use of the newly inaugurated facilities to develop skills, think creatively, and adapt to modern learning practices. He further stated that exposure to technology and practical learning would help students become more confident and employable, and urged them to remain committed to their studies and make meaningful contributions to society.
Speaking on the occasion, Kevileno Angami, Commissioner & Secretary, School Education & SCERT, acknowledged the role of the community and SMDC in supporting the school. She stated that institutions benefit from active community involvement and commended the initiative taken in procuring land for the school.
She emphasised the importance of collective responsibility among teachers, parents and the community in supporting the holistic development of students. She also highlighted that government initiatives provide various educational facilities and stressed the need for effective utilisation of these resources.
Encouraging students and teachers, she called for maintaining discipline, cleanliness and a positive learning environment, and urged all stakeholders to work together for the overall development of the school.
The New Market Area Panchayat, in its address, acknowledged the presence of the dignitaries and encouraged students to make effective use of the facilities provided.
Delivering the welcome address, Kekhriezhazo Dzüvichü, AHM and Chairman, SMDC, expressed appreciation to the visiting dignitaries for their support and stated that the newly inaugurated facilities reflect a collective effort to strengthen educational infrastructure and improve learning opportunities for students.
The programme began with an invocation by Seyievito, Assistant Pastor, Flames of Fire Baptist Church, New Market, followed by the unveiling of the facilities by the Chief Guest. The students presented the school anthem during the programme. A special number titled “Be a Light” was also presented.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Kenny Peseyie, SMDC Member.
