Addressing the people of the state during the 80th Independence Day celebration in Kohima on 15th August 2026, the Chief Minister, Dr. Neiphiu Rio expressed deep concern over the unprecedented and relentless monsoon rainfall that recently affected Nagaland, triggering widespread landslides and flash floods across several districts. He said the disasters resulted in loss of lives and injuries to many people, particularly in Mon district, besides causing extensive damage to houses, properties and public infrastructure.

Expressing heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wishing a speedy recovery to those injured, Rio said the State Government, through the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) and district administrations, has been undertaking rescue and relief operations for affected families along with restoration works.

He informed that an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) from the Ministry of Home Affairs had recently visited Nagaland to assess the extent of the damage and facilitate the necessary support for recovery and rehabilitation. Rio stated that Government remains committed to supporting affected communities and restoring damaged infrastructure and essential connectivity in the aftermath of the monsoon disasters.
