Advisor for Agriculture, Mhathung Yanthan graced the opening ceremony of the 29th Winter Cricket Challenge organised by Senior Noble Klan (SNK) at local ground Wokha on 19th Dec 2024.
Addressing during the gathering Yanthan congratulated the organiser for hosting one of the oldest cricket tournament in Nagaland, and said because of this tournament it has awakened many people of Wokha town and over the years this cricket tournament has grown into bacon of unity, talents and shared love of cricket in Wokha town.
Lauding the organisers for their vision in connecting sports with environmental awareness, he said initiatives like this demonstrates that cricket is more than just a game but it is a platform to influence positive change in society.
Expressing his excitement over this year tournament theme “Green Cover Drive”, he once again congratulated them for linking the game of cricket with the pressing need to protect our environment.
Yanthan further encouraged the players to take this tournament with passion and sportsmanship and urged them to give their best not just for themselves but for their teams and let this tournament be an opportunity to showcase their talents and skills and inspire others with their dedication.
Deputy Commissioner & Chairman District Sports Council, Wokha Vineet Kumar (IAS) highlighted the significant potential for career development in cricket and dwelled on the extensive opportunities sports offers in India. He expressed gratitude to SKN for providing platform to the young players. Furthermore, he proposed enhancement of quality infrastructure and advocated for inclusion of women in cricket tournaments, recognizing the enthusiasm of many young female cricketers in Nagaland.
Lansothung Shitiri, RFO Doyang Beat/Doyang Afforestation Range Wokha, speaking on the theme “Green Cover Drive” said that "Green Cover Drive" is about recognizing the importance of preserving our natural resources, reducing our carbon footprint, and promoting sustainable living. It’s about understanding that our individual actions can collectively make a significant impact, the same way you will be doing as a team throughout the tournament.
In Nagaland, we are blessed with breathtaking natural beauty. Our forests, rivers, and wildlife are not only a source of pride but also a vital part of our ecosystem. However, we are facing numerous environmental challenges, from deforestation to habitat loss, dwindling wildlife populations, and severe climate change impacts, he added.
Appealing to the players, he said as young cricketers, you have the power to make a difference. You can be the agents of change, driving a “Green Cover Drive” that inspires others to join you. As you play cricket, remember that every shot, every run, and every wicket is not just about winning the game but also about winning the battle for a sustainable future and work together to create a better future for ourselves, our children, and our planet.
Chief Team Metamorphosis, Dr. Thungdemo Kyong presented on the importance of blood donation, citing a personal experience to illustrate its life saving potential. He emphasised the vital role blood donation plays in supporting those in need.
Altogether 13 teams are taking part in this year tournament. The programme was chaired by Leornard Mozhui, while vote of thanks was proposed by Organising Secretary SNK Khyolamo Humtsoe.
