The Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, B. Henok Buchem, has issued an order suspending the movement of heavy vehicles with 10 wheels and above along the Kohima–Mao section of National Highway-2 due to safety concerns over weak bridges in the area.
According to the order issued on May 12, 2026, the decision was taken following official communications received from National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited Regional Office, Kohima, and NHIDCL PMU-Jakhama regarding the condition of several bridges along the highway stretch.
Structural assessments reportedly found that bridges located at Chainages Ch. 194+700, Ch. 198+680, Ch. 200+020, and Ch. 210+100 are structurally weak and pose a potential public safety hazard.
In view of the risks involved and to prevent further structural damage, the order stated that the restriction on heavy vehicles will come into effect from May 18, 2026, and remain in force until further notice. Violators of the order will face prosecution under relevant sections of the law.
The Deputy Commissioner further directed NHIDCL authorities to undertake urgent repair and restoration works on the affected bridges in the interest of public safety and smooth movement along the highway corridor.
