The Committee on Environment & Climate Change of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, under the chairmanship of MLA, Achumbemo Kikon, chairperson of the committee on Environment and Climate Change conducted a spot verification on 23rd May, 2025 at Chumoukedima district.
During the interaction with the department, MLA, Achumbemo Kikon, chairperson of the committee on Environment and Climate Change stated that, given the responsibility of chairperson along with seven members, their main interior is to inspect all this waste management, and also the cleaning of the rivers, noise, air pollution, and also the human-animal conflict, interact with the person who are directly dealing and managing all this here, and create awareness. He assured the department that the committee will be suggesting to the government the measures that have to be adopted, the difficulties that they are facing in managing all this, and if there are some funds required, if there is a shortage of funds, that also will definitely be coming to the government for swift and immediate attention.
He pointed that the committee does not have functioning power as well as financial authority, but we have that recommending power, which the government is supposed to take into action and inspect. This is a very important committee for climate change which is impacting all of us. It's not only in America, or Europe, Latin America, Asia it's already here in Nagaland. He therefore said, unless we address immediately, it is affecting our individual life, our family life, our community life, our town, our villages, and urged all the concerned members to make an effort to sensitize our people. On the segregation issues, he is glad to know that the urban have raised their own funding to organize this. In this regard, he request all, and Advisor in charge of Municipal and Urban Development, to immediately find some ways and means to sanction some funds, or find a way to see that some of the difficulties are looked after.
He emphasized that, we all have to put our heads together on how to generate funds, how to go about it, as relying only on the department or Government is not possible with a very limited resources. We would like to see your short-term policy, your long-term policy, he added. He also requested the department to sensitize the people, especially on the segregation part, the biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.
Officer incharge highlighted the land area availability which is not sufficient enough to dump the waste for the whole of Chumoukedima district. She cited, when they calculate the waste generation, from the waste generation, the revenue which they expected to get and the revenue which they are already getting cannot support the infrastructure. She also highlighted on estimated accumulation of waste and management of solid waste management rule 2016.
After the spot verification at Chümoukedima Dumping Site and Chathe River, Pakala Nodi near Referral Hospital, the committee headed for Dimapur spot verification and conducted meeting with the CTC, EDTC, DMC at Hotel Saramati.
