Three-day Unity Mini Hornbill Festival 2024 commenced at DC Office Complex, Peren District Hq. on 5th December 2024 with Deputy Commissioner, Peren, Hiazu Meru as the special guest of the inaugural function.
In his address, Hiazu Meru, said festivals are an integral part of human culture, which provides a platform in bringing people together to celebrate, rejoice and connect with one another, and these vibrant events showcase the rich diversity of traditions, customs and values that defines the communities. He also said, festivals play a crucial role in preserving cultural heritage, as they often revolve around traditional practices, music, dance and art. Through festivals, communities can showcase their rich cultural diversity, share their stories and pass on their values to future generations.
While stressing on festivals, Meru said, festivals play a crucial role in shaping identity as they provide a sense of belonging and connection to one's cultural heritage. They help to create a shared sense of identity among community members, fostering a sense of unity and social cohesion.
Mentioning that the Unity Mini Hornbill Festival at the District Headquarter, Peren is being organised with the intention of bringing closer the various communities inhabiting Peren district, and he expressed his happiness to see the participation from the various Tribal Hohos & CSOs and appealed them to continue extending their support with the same spirit even in the coming days.
Additionally, he acknowledged the support rendered by the two neighbouring villages of Kejanglwa and New Peren led by their respective village Chairmen who have contributed generously in the construction of the Morungs.
In conclusion, the DC thanked all the government departments/contractors/agencies for the support and cooperation extended in ensuring success of this festival as decided in the DPDB meeting. Further, Hiazu appealed to all the Head of Departments and offices to continue with the same team spirit, to develop and strengthen the unity of the officers to work together for the upliftment of the district.
Later, after the inaugural programme the DC inaugurated the Exhibition Stalls & Flower Show Competition at the venue of the festival.
Speaking as the chief host of the event, President Kuki Inpi Nagaland (KIN), L. Singsit, IPS (Rtd) said inorder to see development in the district, we have to honour each others’ culture and traditions while preserving the rich natural resources. He also appealed to the gathering to maintain the greenness of the district as well as move forward in unison and carry the burden together instead of finding out the small differences.
The first day of the festival witnessed captivating cultural performances by Ngaulo Cultural Troupe, Liangmai Cultural Troupe, Rongmei Traditional Troupe and Inbung Village Cultural Troupe. Folk songs were also presented by Heiraisile, Lunghingdaile & Namguihingle. In the afternoon session, tug of war and indigenous games competition were also played.
Earlier, invocation was pronounced by Peren Town Baptist Church, Pastor, Rev. Haiku Nza, while President, Zeme Council Nagaland, A. Ernest Sephe delivered the welcome address.
