With a comprehensive aim at transforming waste materials into valuable resources, a 3-day training programme on 'Waste to Wealth’, initiated by District Administration Tuensang in collaboration with Tuensang Town Council, Swachh Bharat Mission, Urban Development Department, Nagaland, Swachh Bharat Mission- Gramin (Rural), PHED, Tuensang and Eleutheros Christian Society (ECS) with Gwizan Organics & Technologies as Training Partner, was held at Town Hall, Tuensang from 7th to 9th May, 2025.

The inaugural programme, held on 7th May, 2025, was chaired by ADC and Administrator Tuensang Town Council, Shelley Katiry and the keynote address was delivered by DC Tuensang, Lithrongla Tongpi Rutsa. E-Circle, Dimapur, Bendangwala Walling, gave a presentation on safe handling and disposal of e-waste. MD, Gwizan Organics & Technologies, Rokobikho Savino, gave a presentation on waste to wealth and the closing remark was delivered by O. Akum Chang, V.P, GHSS Hakushang.

The first day focused on raising awareness about the importance of waste segregation and the environmental impact of improper waste disposal. Participants were educated on the types of waste and the methods of segregating them at the household level. They were also introduced to the kinds of waste and their nature- biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes. They were also introduced to threats associated with wastes, the importance of segregating wastes, and environmentally friendly ways of managing wastes.

The second day delved into practical aspects of converting waste into valuable products: generation of employment through waste management, making manure at farm sites with farm wastes, waste management leading to agricultural productivity, different ways of using manure in agriculture, domestic/kitchen waste management with zero financial investment and effortless manure making.

The final day emphasised on co-treatment of faecal sludge and biomass, the design and management of domestic urinal tanks and engaging activities to understand the challenges faced by the community in managing waste. 

Practical sessions were imparted on the procedure and technique of making manure out of own wastes, the management process of manure making and harvesting manure. At the end of the 3-day training, certificates were distributed to participants, and commitments were made to continue the efforts towards sustainable waste management.

The outcomes of the 3-day training programme were an increase in awareness through enhanced understanding of the importance of waste segregation and recycling, skill development concerning composting and recycling techniques and sustainable practices for cleaner and healthier communities.

The 'Waste to Wealth' training program in Tuensang District is a significant step towards promoting sustainable waste management practices. By empowering the community with knowledge and skills, the program has laid the foundation for a cleaner and more sustainable environment. The Training Programme was attended by 90 participants from wards, staff from the Department and NGOs from Tuensang Town.
