District Administration Mon and District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW) Mon under Mission Shakti organised an Awareness-cum-Training Programme on Women’s Safety at Workplace at DC’s Conference Hall, Mon on 6th September 2025 with Angun Konyak, Retainer Lawyer and Helen P., Panel Lawyer.
Helen P. spoke on the Domestic Violence Act and Immoral Traffic Prevention Act. She said that human trafficking is a significant problem in Nagaland, often taking forms that are deeply rooted in its social-cultural context. It may not always manifest as overt, organised crime, but it thrives through subtle exploitation, particularly of children and young people. She also said that the problem of human trafficking in Nagaland is often less about large-scale international rings and more about exploitation that happens within or from the community itself. She cited some specific examples namely The Domestic Helper Trap, which is one of the most common problems in the Konyak Society, false promises of Job and Education, Trafficking for the “Glamour Industry”, the “organised” Trafficking Network, and the border problems in Naga Society.
She also spoke on the protection of women through the Domestic Violence Act 2005. She said one of the primary goals of the Act is to secure women’s right to obtain housing. It provides women the right to reside in a household. Domestic violence under the Act is include Physical Abuse, Sexual Abuse, Verbal and Emotional Abuse, and Economic Abuse. She also shared the Legal Framework and Remedies of the Violence. She reminded them that it’s a landmark legislation, a tool for empowerment, and a symbol of justice. She encouraged them, not just to be aware of this law, but to become its advocate, educate our communities, families and children and use this powerful legal instrument.
Angun Konyak, Retainer Lawyer spoke on the Posh Act and SHE Box. She explained on the sexual harassment of women in the workplace and also the prevention of sexual harassment. She also explained the function of Lok Adalats.
Deputy Chief Legal Aid Defence Council, M. Moba spoke about the NALSA, Effective Implementation of Poverty Alleviation Scheme.
The programme was chaired by Simon L Konyak, DEO, PMMVY.
