The first session of the Fourteenth Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) began on 20th March 2023 at the NLA Secretariat, Kohima.

 MEMBERS OF THE 14TH NLA TAKE OATH: 

Protem Speaker, Mhathung Yanthan administered the oath-taking to 59 Members of the NLA, elected to the 14th NLA. Mhathung Yanthan was earlier administered the oath as the Protem Speaker by the Governor of Nagaland on 9th March 2023. Out of the 60 Members, 29 are new Members and 31 are returning Members.

 OBITUARY REFERENCE:

Obituary reference was made to the passing away of Late Dr. Imtiwapang Aier, former Member of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly who expired on 07th January 2023.

 SHARINGAIN LONGKUMER ELECTED UNOPPOSED SPEAKER:

In accordance with Rule 7(3) of the Rules of Procedures and Conduct of Business in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, Sharingain Longkumer was elected unopposed as the Speaker of the Fourteenth Nagaland Legislative Assembly.

 FIRST SESSION OF 14TH NLA COMMENCES

Chief Minister and Leader of the House, Neiphiu Rio congratulated the members on being elected to the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly. He stated that each member is committed to serving the people to achieve peace and development in the State. Congratulating Sharingain Longkumer on being elected unopposed to the post of Speaker of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, he said that the responsibility is being placed on the Speaker to steer and assist the Nagaland Legislative Assembly and guide the Government for legislation and implementation of programmes. Rio added that with his qualification and experience, Longkumer will be able to discharge the functions of the Speaker in a commendable and honorable manner.

Thanking Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio, and the Members of the 14th NLA for the support extended in electing him unopposed as the Speaker of the 14th NLA, Sharingain Longkumer assured all that he would carry out his duties and responsibilities with diligence, dignity, honor, and perform with the highest degree of efficiency, integrity, and impartiality, protecting the rich traditions and high standard of the August House. He urged all the Members of the House to participate and contribute, raising concerns to public importance in the greater interest of democracy. Seeking the support of all the Members of the 14th NLA, Speaker Sharingain also sought the support of the Chief Secretary, Nagaland, and the civil administration, in the routine and official discharge of the duties and responsibilities, in the service and welfare of the people.

Sharingain Longkumer was first elected to the post of Deputy Speaker of the 13th NLA on 18th October 2019 and later, elected unopposed to the post of Speaker on 7th February 2020.
