The Governor of Nagaland, La Ganesan graced the Cultural Day Program of Phek Government College under the under the theme ‘Our Culture, Our Heritage.” as the Chief Guest on 20th April 2023 at the college premises.

Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said Phek holds a place of national importance considering the fact that during World War II in 1944 where Subhas Chandra Bose and his Indian National Army (INA) marched across this land along with the Japanese army for the liberation of our motherland under the famous slogan “Chalo Delhi” campaign and as Phek district witnessed the first entry of INA-Japanese to Naga Hills where thousands of local Nagas joined the liberation march, the region remained as the only liberated territory of India under the administration of ‘Azad Hind Fauj’. And as the College being located in the very route and region where all these historical events took place, the Governor urged them that the historical event must become part of our heritage, as the College celebrates the Cultural Day under the theme “Our Culture, Our Heritage”.

He expressed his happiness that Phek Government College has been assessed and accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with Grade B in February 2019 and also been granted recognition by UGC and included under Section 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956 which will enable the College to receive central funding for its development and also to learn that the students of this college are very gifted in indigenous skills such as making handcrafted products as it promotes  skill development which is the best practices of the college. This is very much in tandem with the New Education Policy’s emphasis on vocational and skill-based education that ensures that our traditional knowledge system is preserved, he said.

The Governor stated and said that the Cultural Day program in Phek Government College provides a small but significant glimpse of India’s rich cultural mosaic and a sense of pride and belongingness to one’s national identity.

Minister for Tourism and Higher Education, Temjen Imna Along who accompanied the Governor, in his speech said Phek Government College has come a long way and congratulated the Phek Government College to be assessed and accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and  been eligible under UGC to grow better and higher for the people. He also added that every achievement of Phek Government College has been dotted by the sacrifices of the community around us and called upon all that every effort for the college should be collective to make the journey as one.

Principal, Phek Government College, Dr. T. Tiakaba Jamir, in his welcome address said, the Phek College was established in the year 1981 with a vision to impart education and then in 1990 the state government took over and aided the college and thus became Phek Government College. He also highlighted that the college offers two undergraduates programme the Bachelor of Arts (BA) and the Bachelor of Science (BSc) and the total students’ enrollment is 297 with total faculty strength of 40 and 30 non-teaching staffs.

The programme was chaired by Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, Dr. Levinu Sakhrie, while the Vote of thanks was proposed by Co-ordinator IQAC & Assistant Professor, Department of History, Dr. Nutazo Lohe. The students of Phek Government College presented folk song and cultural dance during the programme.
