Kezoma Village celebrated the 2nd Edition of Millet Festival at Zake Ground, Kezoma, on 26th August '2026.
The programme was graced by Dr. Zasekuolie Chusi, IAS, Agriculture Production Commissioner (APC) and Commissioner & Secretary, Agriculture and Land Revenue, Government of Nagaland, as the special guest.
Addressing the gathering at the event, Dr. Chusi stressed the importance of millet cultivation in the country, particularly in Nagaland, in view of its climate resilience and suitability to the State's terrain.
He said that millet, once cultivated abundantly, has regained global attention due to its ability to withstand changing climatic conditions. He noted that millet can be grown twice a year and is particularly suitable for the hilly slopes of Nagaland, where the cultivation of other crops, especially rice, may not be feasible.
Dr. Chusi further stated that millet can grow well even in soils and areas unsuitable for many other crops. It matures relatively quickly, requires comparatively low inputs and can contribute significantly to food and nutritional security. In the context of Nagaland, he said, millet is especially important for its high nutritional value and its proven medicinal benefits.
In his short speech, Director of Agriculture, Sanuzo Nienu, said that millet is widely used as a staple food in many developing countries and is mainly cultivated under dryland agriculture. Often referred to as the “poor man's food,” millet is commonly grown in the second year of jhum cultivation.
He highlighted that millet is highly nutritious, containing protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals. He also pointed out that millet cultivation is relatively easy as the crop is largely rain-fed, requires less maintenance, is drought-resistant and matures earlier than many other cereal crops.
Earlier, the programme was led by Mhasivi Naki, Convenor of the Organising Committee, while the invocation was pronounced by Ketholessie Mekro, Catechist, St. Mary's Church, Kezoma. Kikrosa Naki, Chairman, Kezoma Village Council, delivered the welcome note.
Short speech was delivered by Kekhrieletuo Yhome, District Agriculture Officer, Kohima, and a folk tune was presented by the Kezoma Village Women Society.
The festival was conceptualised and organised by the Kezoma Village Council in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and its allied sectors, Government of Nagaland.
