In view of the upcoming festive season the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, Kevithuto Sophie, IPS, has reissued an advisory on 28th October, 2024 urging residents to adhere strictly to the existing ban on bursting firecrackers. The advisory which reiterates an earlier order is aimed at promoting a safe and eco-friendly environment by curtailing the use of firecrackers that can harm the environment and pose health risks to both humans and animals due to loud explosions and toxic emissions.

According to the advisory, limited use of firecrackers will only be allowed on designated festival days. Fireworks are permitted strictly between 8:00 pm and 10:00 pm on Diwali, Gurpurab and similar festivals, while on Christmas and New Year’s Eve, they are allowed from 11:55 pm to 12:30 am. Only Reduced Emission firecrackers, such as Improved and Green Crackers, certified by the Petroleum and Explosive Safety Organization (PESO), are allowed and these must be sold solely by licensed vendors to ensure compliance with environmental standards.

The Commissioner’s order also specifies that no fireworks should be burst within silence zones—defined as areas within 100 meters of hospitals, educational institutions, religious sites and other designated zones. Furthermore the manufacture, sale, and use of series crackers (laris) as well as any firecrackers containing harmful substances like barium salts, lithium, arsenic or mercury or generating noise levels above the permitted decibel limit are strictly prohibited.

Violators of the advisory will be penalized in accordance with the law. The police department appeals to all citizens to act responsibly and support efforts to reduce pollution and safeguard community health during the festivities.
