District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Dimapur in the report stated that Torrential rainfall since the evening of 5th July has led to severe flash floods across Dimapur Urban and surrounding rural areas, submerging multiple low-lying localities. Continuous downpour caused the overflowing of major drains, resulting in waterlogging in several colonies, including Vihume, Netaji, Kuda village, Purana Bazaar B, Walford (Central), Namgalong, and Kalibari (ward-17).
In response, an emergency meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) was held on 7th July, where the members resolved to visit the relief camps and extend immediate aid. They also agreed to submit a comprehensive report to the Government on the flood incident, seeking a permanent resolution.
Preliminary assessments confirm that several residential areas are submerged, with extensive damage to homes. Three relief camps have been established at BSNL quarters in Walford, S.M. colony, and Namgalong colony.
The District Administration, in collaboration with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), initiated full-scale rescue operations on 6th July at 5:50 AM. The operation targeted the worst-affected areas such as Mount View Colony, Purana Bazaar ‘B’, Kuda village, Namgalong, Vihume, Aoyimti, Police Colony, Ekhyo Yan, Walford (Central), Netaji Colony, and Phom Colony. The SDRF deployed one rescue boat and 25 personnel, including trained divers, to evacuate residents stranded in flooded homes and streets. By the morning of 7th July, 844 individuals, including children, the elderly, the sick, special needs individuals, and infants, had been safely rescued and relocated to the three designated relief camps.
However, the situation also saw tragedy. An unfortunate incident of electrocution claimed three lives, two in Kuda village and one in Police Colony. Despite significant challenges posed by submerged roads, rescue operations were completed. Authorities assure that continuous monitoring and support will remain in place until the situation normalises.
