A farewell programme was held at the Kohima Bench of the Gauhati High Court on June 20, 2025, in honour of Justice Kakheto Sema, who is set to retire from judicial service on July 5, 2025. The event was jointly organised by the Registry of the Gauhati High Court (Kohima Bench) and the High Court Bar Association, Kohima.
The programme was compered by Advocate Kezhosano Kikhi and attended by dignitaries from the judiciary, government departments, and the Bar, including the Principal Secretary of the Department of Law and Justice, Registrar and judicial officers of the High Court, the Member Secretary of the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority, presidents and members of various bar associations, and other distinguished guests.
In his farewell address, Justice Kakheto Sema reflected on his 36-year-long legal journey. He recalled his early years of practice, his service as Additional Advocate General and later Principal Advocate General, and his eventual elevation to the Bench. He also shared a deeply personal account of a prophecy received years before his judgeship—later fulfilled, in what he described as a manifestation of God’s plan.
He acknowledged the professionalism of the Bar in Nagaland, calling them “second to none,” and expressed admiration for their contribution to the justice system. He also thanked the Registry for their unwavering support and paid tribute to his wife, who gave up her legal career to support their family. “Without her sacrifices, I would not be where I am today,” he said. He acknowledged his children and encouraged young lawyers to pursue their profession with sincerity and dedication.
He concluded by saying, “As I step away from this esteemed institution, I carry with me cherished memories, deep gratitude, and immense respect for each of you. I am confident that both the Bar and the Bench will continue to uphold the integrity and prestige of this great institution and serve the cause of justice, especially for the poor and the marginalised.”
In his welcome address, Boduve Peter Resu, Joint Registrar (Judicial), described Justice Sema’s legal journey as one marked by “integrity, humility, and an unwavering commitment to justice.” He highlighted the judge’s role in promoting access to justice and infrastructure development during his tenure.
Speaking on the occasion, C.T. Jamir, President of the High Court Bar Association, Kohima, recalled their decades-long association, describing Justice Sema as “not just a colleague, but a brother and mentor.” He lauded his wisdom, sincerity, strength of character, and professional decorum.
Neiko Akami, Member Secretary of the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority, highlighted Justice Sema’s role in improving the service conditions of judicial officers and his commitment to legal aid and access to justice for marginalised communities.
Ajongba Imchen, Registrar of the Kohima Bench, recounted Justice Sema’s dedication to judicial work, even during difficult periods. “He was fair, independent, and deeply compassionate—an example for all of us in the judiciary,” he noted.
In a heartfelt message, Y. Kikheto Sema, Principal Secretary of the Department of Law and Justice, recalled their shared roots and long association. He commended the judge’s integrity, quiet strength, and dedication to public service. Citing Jeremiah 29:11, he wished him a peaceful and fulfilling retirement.
Advocate General K.N. Balagopal described Justice Sema as “a brilliant legal mind with deep humanity,” and expressed regret that his tenure on the Bench was brief. “He deserved more time. But in the time he had, he made a lasting mark,” he said.
Delivering the farewell reference, Justice Y. Longkumer recounted Justice Sema’s academic and professional milestones—from his law degree at the University of Bombay to his elevation as a judge in 2021. She noted key rulings, including one granting minimum pay to fixed-pay workers in remote areas and another addressing encroachment on official quarters, as reflections of his principled approach to justice.
The ceremony featured a special musical performance by members of the High Court Bar and a visual tribute presentation, which served as a poignant reflection on the career of a jurist whose professional excellence and humility have left a lasting impression on the legal community in Nagaland.
Justice Kakheto Sema is set to retire on July 5, 2025, after three years, eight months, and 22 days on the Bench. The programme concluded with a mass prayer.
