The Governor of Nagaland, Nand Kishore Yadav, inaugurated the Polo Hotel, Kohima on 24th October 2026, marking a significant addition to the hospitality infrastructure of the State.
Congratulating the management of Polo Hotels Group, the Governor said that the inauguration of a new hospitality establishment was not merely the opening of a hotel, but represented an investment in the future of the region, the creation of livelihood opportunities, and a commitment to welcoming visitors with warmth and professionalism.
Highlighting Nagaland’s rich cultural traditions, natural beauty, vibrant festivals and diverse indigenous heritage, the Governor observed that as the State continues to attract greater attention as a tourism destination, the need for quality accommodation and professional hospitality services has become increasingly important. He said that the Polo Hotel Kohima would play a meaningful role in supporting tourism, facilitating business activities and providing comfortable accommodation for visitors to the State.
The Governor emphasised that tourism should not be limited to attracting visitors, but must also ensure that the local community benefit from the opportunities it generates. He noted that the growth of the tourism sector could stimulate entrepreneurship, promote local products, create employment opportunities for the youth, and strengthen the economic prospects of Nagaland.
Encouraging the hotel management to establish strong linkages with local entrepreneurs, artisans, farmers, food producers and service providers, the Governor stressed the importance of incorporating locally sourced products, traditional cuisine, indigenous art and local talent into the hotel's operations. Such initiatives, he said, would ensure that the benefits of tourism extend beyond the hotel premises and contribute to the wider development of the community.
He also underscored the importance of environmental responsibility in the hospitality sector, stating that sustainable practices, responsible waste management, energy efficiency and respect for local traditions must remain integral to tourism infrastructure development. He observed that development which preserves the environment and respects cultural identity would serve the interests of both present and future generations.
Referring to the Hornbill Festival as an important platform for showcasing Nagaland's cultural heritage to visitors from across India and abroad, the Governor said that the State has much more to offer throughout the year. He observed that Kohima, with its historical significance, scenic surroundings and cultural vibrancy, has considerable potential to emerge as an attractive destination for leisure travellers, cultural enthusiasts and business visitors.
The Governor further emphasised that the long-term success of the hospitality industry would depend not only on infrastructure but also on quality service, professional standards, cleanliness, safety and the warmth with which guests are received. He expressed hope that Polo Hotel Kohima would uphold these values while reflecting the distinctive character and hospitality of Nagaland.
Appreciating the role of the government departments concerned with tourism and economic development in creating an enabling environment for responsible private investment, the Governor highlighted the importance of constructive partnerships between the Government and the private sector in expanding opportunities, improving infrastructure and making the State a more accessible and attractive destination.
He observed that private sector investments such as Polo Hotel Kohima could inspire greater confidence among entrepreneurs and investors, provided they are accompanied by a long-term commitment to quality, local participation and sustainable growth.
The Governor expressed hope that the new establishment would grow from strength to strength, serve as a welcoming gateway to Nagaland and contribute to the State's tourism potential and economic progress. He also wished that the venture would generate employment for local people, provide meaningful and memorable experiences to visitors, and bring prosperity to the State and the promoters of the hotel.
Minister for Tourism and Higher Education, Temjen Imna Along, in his address, stated that Polo Hotel Kohima is the first five-star hotel in Nagaland, marking a significant milestone in the State’s tourism and hospitality sector.
He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his visionary leadership and the Look East and Act East policies, which have opened new avenues for development and connectivity in the Northeast. He also acknowledged the leadership and support of the Chief Minister of Nagaland, Dr. Neiphiu Rio.
Emphasising the importance of investment and entrepreneurship, he said that Nagaland needs leaders and an emerging business community who believe in the State’s potential and are willing to invest in its future. He commended the Polo management for their tremendous efforts and assured that the Department of Tourism would extend its continued support to the management.
Describing the investment as a lasting contribution to the people of Nagaland, he urged citizens to protect and preserve such institutions.
