Deputy Commissioner Mokokchung, Ajit Kumar Verma, IAS inaugurated the Design Development Workshop (DDW) - Banana Fibre Craft on 24th June 2025 at District Industries Centre, Mokokchung. DDW (Banana Fibre-Craft) is a 25 days training program aimed at enhancing the skills and designs of artisans in the handicraft sector. The event is organised by the DC Handicraft, Ministry of Textiles in collaboration with DIC Mokokchung.
The Deputy Commissioner in his speech stated that societies having traditional knowledge in handicraft when linked with modern skills have an upper hand in the market making such training in handicraft very important for Nagaland. Further, he added that Banana Fibre Craft is very relevant to the State given the vast abundance of its raw materials.
He further added that due to concerns of environmental degradation, there is a drastic shift from plastic materials to bio-degradable materials like Banana Fibre making it a top demand product.
He urged the participants to sincerely take part in the training and ensure that the skill they receive can produce economic results. The DC also urged the participants to take advantage of the huge market demands by producing modernised and marketable products which can be linked to the market with the help of various implementing agencies.
Welcome address was delivered by General Manager, DIC Mokokchung, B. Asangla where she highlighted that this is a first of its kind initiative in the District and that this program is to promote rural livelihood. "Our goal is to build awareness, inspire creativity, sustainability and promote rural entrepreneurship", she added.
HPO, DC Handicraft Kohima, Rajib Chandra Roy, while delivering the keynote address highlighted the importance of Banana Fibre craft due to its huge demands in the markets. He ensured the participants the support of his office in the days ahead.
The event was chaired by Project Analyst, RAMP, Arenlila Jamir, while the vote of thanks was delivered by Inspector of Industries, Renbenthung Kikon.
