The Jail Committee members comprising of Neiko Akami, Member Secretary, NSLSA, K. Hamtok Phom, D.I.G, Prisons, Solezhol Neikha, Sr. Supdt, Central Jail, Chumoukedima along with Longshithung Ezung, Principal District & Session Judge cum Chairman, DDLSA accompanied by Retainer Lawyer, Panel Lawyers, LADC, Dimapur had a Jail visitation cum awareness programme at Central Jail and District Jail, Dimapur on 2nd May 2026. The team first held a meeting at the office of the Sr. Superintendent of Jail, Chumoukedima followed by visitation of jail and awareness programme with the inmates.
During the meeting, discussions focused on infrastructure and inmate’s welfare, including issue of hospitalised inmates. The members resolved to recommend to the Medical Superintendent of District Hospital to install iron bar door for UTPs cell for security reason at Hospital.
At present the Central jail houses 109- UTPs, 55-Convicts, 16-NSA detention, 7- PITNDPS detaineees, making a total of 185 inmates. Legal aid has been provided to 26 inmates. The Jail has also provided computer training/distance education and vocational training on tailoring, carpentry, sanitary pad, manufacturing LED light, repairing and handicrafts to the inmates. Income derived from these activities are saved in the inmates account which will be issued upon their release.
This was followed by the visitation programmed on legal awareness wherein Nishela Assumi, PL chaired the programme, Shri. Neiko Akami, Member Secretary addressed the inmates about their legal rights, updated the status of the cases who has preferred appeal and pre-mature release.
Lonshithung Ezung, Principal District & Sessions Judge, Dimapur cum Chairman, DDLSA gave a briefed overview on the new scheme of NALSA, Mulaqat Se Nyay Tak LEGAL AID DESH under which Panel Lawyers will be deputed in both the respective jails during mulaqat timing to interact with the visiting family members and inmates in coordination with the prison officials every week.
Solezhol Neikha, Sr. Supdt, Central Jail in his speech encouraged the inmates to reform and become responsible citizens after their release, he also acknowledged the members for visiting the jail and provided refreshments to the inmates.
Later, the members visited Dimapur District Jail and recommended the construction of a new barrack for male and ward convict block, as well as a block/workshed for proper training and rehabilitation of the inmates. They also recommended installation of European toilet in female ward and constructing 2 (two) septic tanks in male ward.
The jail currently housed a total of 68 inmates, including 58 male and 10 female, of whom 22 have been provided with legal aid. After the meeting, the members had an awareness programme where Kiyekali, Panel lawyer chaired the programme, Neiko Akami, Longshithung Ezung and Solezhol Neikha apprised the inmates about their rights, status of their cases, identified some UTPs who are not represented by Lawyers, highlighted about the NALSA Mulaqat Se Nyay Tak LEGAL AID DESH and encouraged the inmates to make productive use of their time in jail by learning vocational skills.
Sangto Longchar, Asst. LADC spoke about the role and function of Legal Aid defence Counsel, while vote of thanks was proposed by Dozhoyi Cukhami, Jailor, District Jail, Dimapur.
