The 1st edition of Longleng District football league, organised by the Longleng District football Association commenced at Public Ground, Longleng on 12th June 2026. The President of Phom Sports Association, S. Yanger Angh, grace the inaugural programme as the special guest.
The special guest in his address urged Players to Aim for State and National level. Describing football as more than just a sport, a senior official underscored its role in instilling discipline, dedication, respect, and a never-give-up spirit among youth, while calling on players to remain humble and uphold the values of the game.
He remarked, “Football is not just a game - it teaches discipline, dedication, and respect. It embodies the spirit of never giving up, no matter the odds.” He stated that football is regarded as a gentleman’s game and appealed to spectators to support and encourage players throughout the match.
Urging the participants to display true sportsmanship, he said, “Players must be humble at all times and show respect towards opponents and match officials. Victory and defeat are part of the game, but character and discipline define a true sportsperson.”
He further encouraged young footballers to treat every tournament as a stepping stone for greater opportunities with dedication and work hard to represent the district, the State and the Nation, and bring laurels to the district.
He also highlighted the role of the crowd, noting that positive encouragement from supporters boosts player’s morale and maintains the spirit of the game. “The crowd should always back the players. Cheer for good football, appreciate both teams, and help create a healthy sporting environment.
The event saw active participation from local clubs and youth teams across the district, with officials from the Department of Youth Resources & Sports also in attendance. The program concluded with a pledge by players to uphold fair play and discipline on and off the field.
President of all ward union Longleng, Atok N. Phom, in his short exhortation, said the Kick off of the 1st ever LDFA league tournament is a monumental milestone, the passion for football has burned brightly in our backyard, our town and villages.
He congratulated the LDFA for the visionary initiative, laying the foundations for generations of the Phoms. Encouraging the players, he said this tournament is a proof that Longleng is moving forward and our youth are ready to compete, excel and conquer. Referring to the LDFA’s motto: "Rise as one and win as all", he hoped that the 1st edition league would be the breeding ground for the future of the state and the nation.
A special song was presented by, Yingp Phom, while A. Angmau Phom proposed the vote of thanks. Earlier, the welcome address was delivered by the President Longleng District Football Association, L. Pangnaü Phom, while invocation was pronounced by Pastor Longleng Town Baptist Church, Rev. H. Beaü Phom. The programme was chaired by M. Chunyei Phom.
