The Sümi Aphuyemi Kiphimi Kuqhakulu (SAKK), in collaboration with the Subdivisional District Planning and Development Board (SDPDB) Pughoboto, Zunheboto, has successfully concluded a landmark educational tour to Tuensang from June 24th to 27th, 2025. The focus of the tour was a detailed study of the “Sochunm Concept”—an innovative, community-based educational model developed by the people of Tuensang.

“Sochunm”, which translates to “Smart House” in the Chang dialect, refers to traditional dormitory-style setups that have been re-imagined as vibrant community-run learning centres. These spaces are addressing educational disparities by offering structured support in academics, skill development, and cultural preservation for both rural and urban youth.

The visiting team, consisting of six Unit Presidents under SAKK and four members of SAKK, had the opportunity to interact with local stakeholders, observe the functioning of Sochunm Centers, and gain valuable insights into how community participation can drive impactful educational reform. Witnessing this unique grassroots initiative firsthand reaffirmed the transformative potential of locally-led solutions and inspired the team to explore how the Sochunm model might be adapted and implemented in the regions of Pughoboto.

The delegation also had the privilege of hearing from Rev. Achu Chang, Executive Secretary of the Chang Baptist Lashong Thangyen (CBLT) and President of NBCC, whose presentation added depth and perspective to the Sochunm philosophy.

SAKK emphasized that the success of the tour was made possible through the fund and support of MLA Dr. Sukhato A. Sema, who had been instrumental in empowering the youth and educational upliftment. It also expressed deep gratitude to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Pughoboto, Tiameren Chang, NCS, who not only spearheaded and coordinated the tour but also served as a gracious host to the delegation in Tuensang.

Special acknowledgment was given to SDPO Pughoboto, Hankiumong, Vice-Chairman of Pughoboto Town Council, Hokiqhe Sheqi, and SDAO Pughoboto, Kitoho Michel Swu for their invaluable presence and logistical support, including the provision of a vehicle that enabled the tour.

SAKK extended its heartfelt thanks to all individuals and institutions who made the journey possible and believes that the collaboration, vision, and belief in the power of youth education are paving the way for a brighter, community-driven future.
