Collaborating with the District Sports Office, District Education Office, Kohima District Athletic Association, and District Hub for the Empowerment of Women Kohima, the Kohima District Administration organized the "Inter-School Athletic Meet" from 20th to 21st July 2023 under the program "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao" by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, GOI, at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima.
The Special Guest of the inaugural session, Advisor for School Education and SERT, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, said that under "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao," the government has created many avenues for the girl child. He urged girl students to embrace the given opportunities to the maximum. Dr. Yhome also acknowledged the girls' excellent performance in exams like HSLC, HSSLC, and others and congratulated them for their achievements. He cited the example of two women legislators in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly for the first time, considering it a symbol of progress. Dr. Yhome further encouraged the girl students to stay physically and mentally fit through sports and emphasized that a certificate of excellence comes only with discipline and true sportsmanship. He assured larger events covering all districts in the near future and wished the participants the best.
In his keynote address, Deputy Commissioner Kohima, Shanavas C IAS, mentioned that, unlike other states, activities meant for girls are limited, especially in the field of sports. Therefore, under the "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao" program, the District Administration is organizing the inter-school sports meet in collaboration with the line department to create awareness of career opportunities, especially among girl students. Shanavas also encouraged students to be more disciplined and sincere to discover their potential and bring more excellence to themselves and the state as a whole. He requested the students to participate with a true sportsmanship spirit.
Dr. Yhome also felicitated Girl Achievers in the field of sports during the program. The award was given to Ms. Vikono Kezo of Sakhabama Village and Edikunu Rikha of Kidima Village for their exceptional performance and achievements at the Northeast and National Levels.
