The much-awaited 24th edition of the annual Hornbill Festival vibrantly commenced at Naga Heritage Village, Kisama on 1st December 2023. 

Delivering the festival message, the Chief Host and Governor, La Ganesan stated that it was an honour to open the gates to an enchanting world where culture dances through the tapestry of time, and tradition embraces modernity with grace. He said that the Hornbill Festival is a celebration that not only showcases the rich Naga heritage, but also embodies the spirit of unity in diversity. He added that the festival is an open invitation to the world, to immerse themselves in the Naga hospitality and experience the rich culture and tradition.

The Governor underlined that the 10-day long Hornbill Festival is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Nagas and their deep-rooted traditions. He called the Festival an event that transcends the boundaries of mere festivity and a realm of cultural exuberance; a testament to the living traditions and memories of the people kept alive through different means.

Welcoming the guests from across India and the world, Governor, La Ganesan called upon them to connect through the folklores, the cuisines and the unbroken bond of the communities. He also hoped that they carry a piece of Nagaland in their hearts.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in his address welcomed all the guests, tourists and the people of Nagaland to the 24th edition of the Hornbill Festival a cultural phenomenon that encapsulates the spirit of Nagaland. The Hornbill Festival is a culmination of Nagaland’s tourism slogan “Land of Festivals” which epitomizes the unity, diversity and oneness of the Naga people, he said.

            Chief Minister said this festival brings together all the tribes and sub-tribes of Nagaland, local communities, NGOs and the government, he added. The aim of this festival is clear to review, protect and preserve the richness and uniqueness of the Naga Heritage. It also provides a closer understanding of the people, offering a ringside view of this elusive land, its inhabitants and their culture. Earlier, this festival used to host renowned dignitaries and cultural troupes from various Asian countries including Thailand, Japan, Myanmar, Korea, Europe and beyond. This global participation has turned this cultural celebration into a melting pot of diverse traditions, fostering a beautiful exchange of ideas, art and heritage.

            He also mentioned that Hornbill Festival 2023 would host bands and cultural ambassadors from America, Germany, Colombia, South Korea and from all over the country. The participation of the United States in a number of events and renowned German rock band international adds flavor to the festival. Rio also expressed his happiness to host cultural, music and official delegations from the beautiful country of Colombia as one of our country partner and expressed hope that the collaboration would strengthen ties, foster greater understanding, and create lasting memories.

Honoured guest, USA Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti in his greetings expressed hapiness over the participation of all the Naga tribes in this Hornbill festival. He greeted the people of Nagaland on behalf of the United States and mentioned that the States has 574 Native tribes. Garcetti emphasized on the importance of tribe to tribe connect and mentioned that in the current world, there is too much division and war, yet we see unity and peace in Nagaland through this festival. He also expressed his happiness to be part of the Hornbill festival.

British High Commissioner to India, Alex Ellis as an honoured guest stated that Nagas and the British are closely intertwined through the past history and hoped that the bond grows even stronger.

            German Consul General of India, Barbara Voss expressed her happiness to be part of the Hornbill Festival and thanked the Chief Minister for inviting her to the festival. She said she got to know more about the Naga tribes, their attachment to songs and dances from this festival.

            Dr. Victor Echeverri Jaramillo Ambassador of Colombia to India greeted the people Nagaland and expressed happiness to be invited to the Hornbill Festival. He lauded the vibrant culture and traditions of Naga people, and cherished the good environment on his way to the Hornbill Festival.

“Traditional blessings” was pronounced by the Chief of the village, Kukegwo, Monte Chupa and invocation by the Bishop of Kohima, Rev. Dr. James Thoppil. Vote of thanks, co-host, Minister for Tourism and Higher Education, Temjen Imna Along.

The gathering was enthralled with a colourful presentation, Call of the Hornbill, a presentation by the Task Force for Music & Arts (TaFMA), showcasing various traditional music, dance and arts. It was followed by "Kisama walk", a visit to the bamboo pavilion and traditional Morungs by the dignitaries.
