The District Level Coordination Committee (DLCC) of the District Tobacco Control Cell (DTCC) convened its quarterly meeting on 5th August 2024 at the DC's Conference Hall in Kohima. The meeting was chaired by Deputy Commissioner of Kohima and DLCC Chairman, Kumar Ramnikant IAS.
The committee focused on reinforcing the ban on the sale of tobacco products within a 300-foot radius of educational institutions. It was decided that first-time offenders will face fines, while repeated offenses will result in both fines and the sealing of shops. Persistent offenders will face fine and license cancellation. Also, the committee agreed to increase shop inspections to ensure compliance.
DC Ramnikant commended the DTCC Kohima for effectively conducting Focus Group Discussions and Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities in various institutions across Kohima, despite limited funding. He proposed the initiation of tobacco-free wards, colonies, and villages, in addition to the existing tobacco-free school and home initiatives.
During the program, District Nodal Officer of DTCC Kohima, Dr. I Simon Sumi, declared Government High School New Market, Government High School Forest Colony, and Government Middle School Naga Bazaar as tobacco-free schools.
