The 78th Independence Day was celebrated at the Dimapur District Sports Council (DDSC) Stadium, Dimapur on 15th August, 2024. 

Minister, Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Jacob Zhimomi, graced the occasion as the chief guest. He inspected the parade, hoisted the National Flag, and delivered the Independence Day speech, highlighting the significance of the day and the progress made by the nation.

District Awards for Meritorious Service were presented by Zhimomi to the following in recognition of their distinguished services:

  1. Er. S. Kakuto Chishi, J.E, EE Dimapur, Electrical Division, Sub-Division No.1, Dimapur.
  2. K.Akahoto Yeptho, Head Constable, Superintendent of Excise & Prohibition, Dimapur
  3. Menguzelie Rio, Head D.B, Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur 
  4. Repachiba Ao, UDA, Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur 
  5. Dimapur Urban Council Chairman Federation, Civil Society 
  6. Y.Pongba, Civilian.

The event featured a total of 11 parade contingents, led by Parade Commander Kr. Ngimchule Nampeung, NPS, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dimapur, Parade 2 i/c Pachio Khiamniungan, Subedar Major 15th NAP IR Mahila Battalion & Parade BHM Havildar Khekato Sema, Police Commissionerate, Dimapur. The participating parade contingents were as follows:

2. 14h NAP (IR) Battalion

3. Commissioner of Excise

4.Home Guard

5. Ex- Servicemen

6. NCC, Dimapur, Government College

The cultural segment of the program included patriotic songs performed by students from GMS Town Middle School, GMS Rangapahar Crossing School, and GMS Duncan Lotha. Patriotic dances were presented by students from GMS Lhomithi and S. Apostolic Mission Residential School, while Aiko Cultural Group the presented a traditional folk dance.

Zhimo also inaugurated eight stalls during the Independence day celebration.  The stalls featured a variety of exhibits and activities of the various departments. The following departments took part in the exhibition.  Department of Agriculture, Department of Horticulture, Khadi & village industries commission, Department of Health & Family Welfare, Dimul, District rural development agency (Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission, Dimapur), Dimapur District Legal Services Authority, Nagaland Handloom & Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited (NHHDC).

Earlier, the programme started with the parade review by the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, Kevithuto Sophe, IPS.

In the evening session, the celebrations concluded with a prize distribution ceremony, followed by the Retreat performed by the 43rd Assam Rifles, marking the end of the day’s events.

The event was attended by various Head of Districts and civil society.
