The Hornbill Bamboo Carnival 2025 commenced at Nagaland Bamboo Resource Centre, Sovima, Chumoukedima on December 7, 2025. The three-day carnival is organised by the Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency (NBDA) as part of the Hornbill Festival 2025, to celebrate Nagaland’s growing bamboo-based sector.

The inaugural Program was chaired by Member, NBDA, Mhonlumi Patton while Chairman, NBDA, Nuzota Swuro attended the event as the Special Guest. 

Swuro in his address, highlighted the importance of integrating the Bamboo Carnival into the Hornbill Festival, noting that it reflected the State Government’s and NBDA’s long-term vision to promote bamboo as Green Gold. He also acknowledged the pioneers and all the contributors who shaped the Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency since its establishment in 2005 under the Nagaland Bamboo Policy 2004. He outlined NBDA’s key achievements, including the promotion of bamboo plantation across Nagaland, covering 45,621 hectares of plantations and 1,506 hectares of block plantations under the National Bamboo Mission.  NBDA also distributed 24 lakh saplings and expanded nursery propagation, he added.

He highlighted the establishment of a Bamboo Setum with 26 species, development of market infrastructure such as Rural Bamboo Haats, Bamboo Bazaars, and community amenities and several bamboo-based production units including charcoal briquettes, agarbatti sticks, bamboo strips, venetian blinds, and structural treatments.

 He mentioned that NBDA has trained farmers, entrepreneurs, and artisans across various programmes, including a recent design and value-addition workshop held on World Bamboo Day,2025 for artisans. The Agency had also participated in domestic and international trade fairs to build market linkages.

Stating that the Hornbill Bamboo Carnival aimed to promote bamboo’s potential in crafts, construction, and creativity, he encouraged participants to learn, collaborate, and support NBDA’s initiatives and announced plans to establish a Bamboo Research & Training Centre and strengthen market connections. He concluded his speech by expressing his gratitude to the organisers and participants and hoped that visitors would carry back memorable experiences from the Hornbill Bamboo Carnival 2025.

Er. M. Imkonglemba, Team Member , NBDA in his welcome address stated that the event celebrates bamboo-related crafts, arts, and artisans, with an aim to spread awareness about bamboo's importance. He acknowledged and appreciated the presence of all attendees and stakeholders who have contributed to NBDA's two-decade journey.

During the program, a coffee table book titled celebrating 20 years of Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency: Fostering a Sustainable Future was launched by Nuzota Swuro, Chairman, NBDA. The book documents NBDA's 20-year journey from the adoption of the Nagaland Bamboo Policy in 2004 and the NBDA's formation in 2005, to its achievements in plantation, skill development, enterprise creation, and innovation.

The ceremony concluded with the formal launching of the exhibition stalls by the special guest, marking the beginning of the three-day Bamboo Carnival.

Earlier, The program began with an invocation by Toholi Achumi, Youth Director, Sumi Baptist Church, Sovima. Vote of thanks was delivered by Menguphrezo Ziephru. The carnival will continue from till 9th December  and will remain open to visitors from 2pm to 9 pm each day.
