Jankhiung Kheang under Sangphur Village celebrated its 75th Platinum Jubilee of Sangkong Lukhi with great enthusiasm and traditional fervour on 14th January 2026. The historic occasion marked 75 years of the establishment of the sacred log drum at Jankhiung Kheang, symbolising the rich cultural heritage of the Khiamniungan community.
MLA and Advisor for Youth Resources, S. Keoshu, graced the celebration as the Special Guest. He congratulated the colony member for showcasing the unity and cooperation amongst the members and for the welfare of the village since the forefather’s time. He said the celebration of colony platinum jubilee marks a history significant not only for the Yimkhiungs but also for the Naga as a whole for preserving the rich Naga heritage by maintaining Naga Colony Morung imparting verbal knowledge inherited from the forefathers.
Sangphur Village is home to five log drums, of which the Jankhiung Kheang log drum is the oldest installed in the year 1951. The log drum holds immense cultural and spiritual value for the community.
K. Rhakiumong, Village Council Chairman, emphasized the importance and traditional practices associated with the log drum. He stated that in earlier times, six individuals were specially elected to guard the log drum, reflecting its sacred status. He further shared the belief that keeping the log drum within the Kheang brings wealth and prosperity to the colony.
Adding a historical depth to the event, Head GB of Sangphur Village, Lakiumong shared the firsthand accounts and the history of the Jankhiung Kheang log drum, drawing admiration and respect from the gathering. He is around 115 years old and serving for over 80 years as Head GB of the village.
The jubilee celebration stood as a testament to the enduring cultural legacy, unity, and heritage of the Khiamniungan people, reinforcing the importance of preserving ancestral traditions for future generations.
The programme began with the invocation of God’s blessings by H. Mahching, Deacon, and welcome address by K. Rhakiumong, Programme Convenor. A special cultural performance was presented by the Jankhiung Kheang Youth, showcasing traditional expressions and cultural pride.
Deputy Commissioner of Shamator, Chubatemjen and Deputy Commandant, Y. Kumtsu Yimchunger also spoke and highlighted the significance of preserving indigenous traditions and cultural identity. The vote of thanks was delivered by GB T. Yimto,
