The Governor of Nagaland, Nand Kishore Yadav, chaired a review meeting of the Department of Agriculture, Nagaland held at Lok Bhavan, Kohima, on 28th July 2026.
During the meeting, the Department made a presentation on its organisational structure, ongoing schemes and programmes, achievements, challenges and future plans for the development of the agriculture sector in the State. The presentation also highlighted the department's role in improving agricultural productivity, promoting sustainable farming practices, strengthening irrigation infrastructure, enhancing mechanisation and increasing farmers income through various Centrally Sponsored Schemes and State initiatives.
The Department informed that nearly 70 per cent of Nagaland's population is engaged in agriculture, with women constituting around 65 per cent of the agricultural workforce. It also presented details of the State's agricultural profile, production targets, cropping intensity and progress achieved under various programmes.
The meeting reviewed the implementation of key schemes including Krishonnati Yojana, PM-Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), National Food Security and Nutrition Mission (NFSNM), National Mission on Edible Oils, Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCD-NER), National Mission on Natural Farming, PM-Kisan, Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM), Per Drop More Crop (PDMC), Rainfed Area Development, Agroforestry and other initiatives aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector in the State.
The Department also apprised the Governor of the progress made in expanding oil palm cultivation, promoting organic and natural farming, developing water harvesting infrastructure, supporting farmer training and capacity building, and improving market linkages for agricultural produce. The challenges faced in implementation, including fragmented landholdings, inadequate infrastructure, difficult terrain and road connectivity, were also discussed along with measures to address them.
The Governor appreciated the efforts of the Department in implementing various developmental programmes across the State and emphasised the importance of strengthening sustainable agriculture, improving farmers livelihoods and ensuring effective implementation of government schemes for the benefit of the farming community. He encouraged the Department to continue adopting innovative approaches, enhance convergence among stakeholders and work towards making agriculture more productive, resilient and market oriented.
Senior officers of the Governor's Secretariat and officials of the Department of Agriculture were present during the review meeting.
