The Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW), supported by the National Commission for Women (NCW), organised a one-day legal awareness program at Jalukie Town under Peren district on 22nd October, 2021 in collaboration with the Jalukie Town Women Welfare Organization.
Nagaland State Commission for Women Chairperson, Khrienuo Tachu in her keynote address asserted that the Commission was committed to the empowerment of women and girls. She also stated that Nagaland is a patriarchal society where men as protectors can play an important role against various discrimination faced by the Naga women and girl child in the society. While pointing out to the menfolk, Tachu maintained that good patriarchy ensures a safe society resulting in less discrimination, thereby, safeguarding our Naga women and girl child. She said that we need to nurture the girl child and give quality education because, once they are well educated they will be able to survive wherever they are, stay strong and knowing their rights.
Further, she encouraged the participants to develop entrepreneurial skills, to protect themselves from cybercrime and most importantly be educated to become self-productive and self-reliant, upholding the value of dignity of labour. She also appealed the participants to create a safe haven for women. An appeal was made to the gathering to render equal treatment to both the boy and girl child, which she said, should start from every home. The NSCW Chairperson was touched and encouraged to witness many men amidst the gathering.
Panel Lawyer, Peren District Legal Services Authority, Italang Ramlia, facilitated the session on "Legal Rights". He highlighted the various legal rights for women guaranteed by the Indian Constitution such as the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (prevention, prohibition and redressal) Act 2013, Law of Maintenance of Women in India, and Rights available and to arrested person/women in India, etc.
Centre Administrator, Sakhi-One Stop Centre (OSC) Peren, Asuni, facilitated the session on "Forms of Gender Based Violence; & Services of One Stop Centre" where she gave a brief introduction on the functioning of the OSC, the various services available and how to avail them. The main objective of OSC is to provide integrated support and assistance to women affected by violence both in public and private spaces under one roof and also to facilitate immediate, emergency and non-emergency access services including medical, legal, psychological and counselling etc., Asuni added. She also highlighted on the Women Helpline 181, their importance and assistance provided to aggrieved women.
President Chairmen Union, Jalukie, Hauneu Haika, spoke on the session "The Way Forward" where he said that in the changing world, women are leading the nation. He encouraged the participants that women should be given equal platform in every sphere. Haika went on to state that many of the Naga men-folk are divided over tribal lines, political lines and for vested interests and in such a crucial stage where Naga political issues are being tabled and discussed, the voice of the women should also be heard. He also urged the NSCW to create a platform for the women leaders and women in general to be active participants in the ongoing Naga political issue. He expressed that every woman has the capability and potential to perform in bigger platforms.
The programme was chaired by NSCW Secretary and Joint Secretary of the Social Welfare Department, Bodeno S Colo while vote of thanks was proposed by Former President, Jalukie Town Women Welfare Organization, Adai Iheilung.
The team visited the Community Health Centre, Jalukie and interacted with the doctors and nurses, expressing their gratitude to them for taking good care of the patients especially during the pandemic. They also met a patient and extended a token to her. The NSCW also paid a visit to the Women Police Station at Jalukie and interacted with the officials.
The Commission made an inspection of the ongoing construction of the Sakhi-One Stop Centre (OSC) located in the new DC complex, Peren alongwith the Centre Administrator of OSC and the District Administration, where the various challenges of the OSC were discussed.
