The SDG Coordination Centre (SDGCC) team, Planning & Coordination Department, visited the SDG innovation Project sites of ‘SusDesi’ and ‘Pilot Operation of a Waste-to-Protein Treatment Facility’at Dimapur on 2nd February 2022 to review the progress of work.
The SusDesi project with implementing partner-LiFE has created a sustainable way of tackling the waste disposal dilemma in Lake View Colony, Dimapur, and have paved a way for other innovative solutions catered to the needs of the community to address waste management by directly involving the community on the principles of ‘learn, unlearn and relearn’. The project has successfully sensitized the community at Lake View area of Dimapur District on waste segregation and management and has introduced Door-to-Door waste collection with a systematic routine to dispose of waste directly from the comfort of their residence, introduced vermicomposting practices in the household and have set up non-recyclable waste and rejects recovery facility. A material recovery facility has also been set up to store recyclable waste. The project has also created an employment avenue to the unemployed youth in the locality.
Under the Pilot Operation of a Waste-to-Protein Treatment Facility project, implemention by Jongpong Chiten and Dr. Akumtoshi Lkr, a breeding facility for rearing the Black Soldier Fly (BSF) is set up at Bank Colony, Dimapur, on September 2021 to test the Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) process on various organic waste streams and thus determine the feasibility of BSF farming in Nagaland as a means for sustainable organic waste treatment i.e. waste reduction and waste transformation into valuable products (animal feed protein, and bio fertilizer).
The projects are part of the ‘SDG Innovation Participatory Action Research Initiative’ to implement innovative solutions for addressing the on-ground specific challenges which will contribute towards the achievement of our SDG Vision 2030.
The Government of Nagaland has been mobilizing individuals, institutions, agencies and communities to take action for the achievement of the SDGs, whilst building coalitions across communities and societies at the local level, and create a variety of solutions for the priority SDG and their indictors. It is yet another effort towards the SDG Vision 2030.
