Public Health Engineering Department PHED (Rural) Division Dimapur in collaboration with the Niuland Town Council organized a one-day workshop on plastic waste management & segregation of waste at the source with the theme "Freedom from Garbage" on 12th December 2022 at DC Conference Hall Niuland.

ADC & Administrator, NTC T. Lemlila Sangtam, in her keynote address, thanked the DC for her support and also acknowledged various departments and its officers and all the participants and representatives from 19 villages present in the event.

ADC said the event is a consortium of departments such as DA, Municipal, PHED, and NPCB collaborating for a common cause - To make their town and district clean and green. 

“Because we believe, together we can and together we will”- NTC motto NTC has initiated a “Freedom from garbage-Campaign”.

Meanwhile, Hukato Chishi, IFS, Member secretary, Nagaland Pollution Control Board urged the public to cooperate with the District Administration and carry forward the district to a better place. Chishi also said that NGT has imposed Rs. 200 crores on the state government due to the failure of sewage & solid waste management in the state and added if they don't start managing solid, sewage & plastic management today their land and environment will be in a worse situation after 10- 20 years from now.

Also speaking at the event, Imojungla Longkumer District Coordinator, DWSM, PHED Dimapur stated that Swachh Bharat Mission 2 aims for villages to progress towards ODF-Plus status. Solid Liquid Waste Management is implemented, ODF sustainability is maintained and the village is visually clean.

Plastic waste management is a distinct component of SLWM implementation at the village level which is to be an integral part of GPDP. To practice segregation of plastic waste at the source of generation at HH, business establishments, institutions, etc for effective implementation of plastic waste management.

The importance of adopting the 4Rs of Plastic Waste Management Reduce Reuse Recycle Recover is an effective principle for tackling the Plastic Waste menace. Yanathung Kithan, Scientist 'B' Nagaland Pollution Control Board highlighted the solid waste management rules 2016 and duties and responsibilities of the Deputy Commissioner, every waste generator, Urban Local bodies, and village panchayat. Kithan also mentioned the Nagaland integrated waste management policy 2019 which is to achieve sustainable waste management throughout the state by 2030, and urged the participants to give community participation and take the role of "My waste my Responsibility"

The programme also witnessed the exiting experience of sharing and demo which are local products by the Kuda Mini Treatment Plant Unit at Kuda Dimapur.

Earlier, Er. Toshika SDO PHE- Niuland delivered the welcome note and invocation by Youth Pastor Niuland Town Baptist Church, Vivi Zhimomi. Environment Engineer NPCB Akali Swu also spoke on the programme. The programme concluded with words on the way forward by Er. Nirie-e Nisa, EE, PHED Rural Division, Dimapur.
