In commemoration of World Soil Day, the District Soil Conservation Office, Wokha organised a “Farmers Mela” on 7th December 2021 at community hall, Soil Colony, Wokha.
DSCO Wokha, Lidemo Murry said World Soil Day is commemorated on 5th December annually and is aimed at spreading awareness about the importance of soil, he said degradation of soil is a pressing environmental issue and the Day encourages people to come together and think of sustainable ways to manage soil resources.
Speaking on soil management, Lidemo said it is the application of operations, practices, and treatments to protect soil and enhance its performance.
JSCO, Wokha, Nzanbeni N. Jami in her keynote address spoke on the importance of Soil Health Card (SHC), stating that SHC is used to assess the current status of soil health and when used overtime to determine changes in soil health that are effected by land management, it displays soil health indicators and associated descriptive terms. She said SHC will be valid for three years and urged the farmers to avail the opportunity for boosting their agricultural production.
Later during the technical session, demonstration of soil sample collection and demonstration on soil testing was done at District Soil Testing Laboratory Wokha. SHC cards were also distributed to the farmers during the program.
