The Department of Industries & Commerce and Nagaland Industrial Development Corporation limited in collaboration with Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)-National Research Centre on Mithun (NRCM), Medziphema successfully organized a 2-day technology clinic on enhancing meat processing efficiency through technology under RAMP Scheme at ICAR-NRCM, Medziphema on 24th & 25th June 2025.

The inaugural program commenced with a welcome address by Senior Scientist ICAR-NRCM, Dr. Sapunii S. Hanah, , followed by a brief speech from Keneirienuo T. Zatsu, Deputy Director of the Department of Industries & Commerce. The Deputy Director in her speech discussed the RAMP project’s initiatives and objectives, highlighting its focus on empowering MSMEs (Micro, Small, Medium Enterprises) through targeted support and resources. The program concluded with a key address by Dr. Girish Patil S, Director of ICAR-NRCM, Medziphema.

The topics of the technology clinic were: Clinic 1: Introduction to meat processing; Clinic 2: Product formulation and processing (patties); Clinic 3: Product formulation and processing (sausage & Nuggets); Clinic 4: Preservation & storage of processed products.

Clinic 1 was conducted by Dr. Girish Patil S, Director of ICAR-NRCM, Medziphema where he presented an overview of meat types and emphasized on the importance of hygienic practices in meat handling. He elaborated and emphasized on the business benefits of value-added processing for meat, noting Nagaland’s substantial meat market as a prime opportunity.

Clinic 2,3 & 4 were supervised by Dr. Sapunii S. Hanah and assisted by trainer Vivi Kweho. In these sessions the participants received practical training using meat processing equipment such as meat slicers, mincers, bowl choppers, hot air ovens, and vertical sausage fillers; step-by-step guidance on the formulation, mixing, and cooking processes involved in producing sausages, nuggets, and patties; techniques to maintain product consistency, ensure safety, and extend shelf life of processed meat products.

Along with the 4 clinics, an awareness and on-spot registration for FSSAI and UDYAM was done by the RAMP team from the Directorate of Industries and Commerce. The technology clinic drew 27 MSMEs in each clinic from across multiple districts including Kohima, Dimapur, Chumoukedima, Mokokchung, Mon and Wokha.

The 2-day technology clinic concluded with a valedictory program graced by the chief guest Dr. Chirantan Chattopadhyay, Former V.C, Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya, West Bengaland Guest of Honour Dr. K.K. Baruah, Member General Body, ICAR, New Delhi who handed out the certificates to all participants, encouraging them to utilize the knowledge gained to improve local meat processing standards.

RAMP (Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance) is a scheme supported by the World Bank and implemented by the Government of India. It aims to enhance market access, credit availability, and capacity building for MSMEs. As MSMEs in Nagaland continue to grow and modernize, access to advanced machinery and technology becomes vital for sustaining their competitiveness. Under the RAMP initiative, Technology Clinics are being organized to connect entrepreneurs with leading experts and technocrats, enabling them to gain the technical know-how and insights needed to upgrade their businesses.

This initiative is also instrumental in supporting the post-COVID-19 economic recovery by providing MSMEs in Nagaland with essential tools, resources, and guidance to succeed in a rapidly evolving market environment. This initiative signifies a pivotal advancement in promoting value addition, strengthening hygiene practices, and fostering technological innovation within Nagaland’s meat industry.
