Raising pertaining issues during the zero hour on the second day of the 8th session of the 14th NLA at NLA Hall, Kohima on 3rd March 2026, MLA, Achumbemo Kikon drew attention to the growing human-animal conflict, particularly the human-elephant conflict in Bhandari sub-division. He informed the House that many farmers have been compelled to abandon their fields due to frequent intrusions and destruction caused by wild elephants and called for a concrete solution to the problem.
As a possible remedial measure, Kikon suggested the promotion of Jatropha cultivation as an alternative strategy to mitigate human-elephant conflict. He informed the members that he could facilitate a tie-up with an organisation to establish a reliable and commercially viable integrated Jatropha ecosystem in the region.
He further stated that Jatropha cultivation could contribute to economic growth, as its seeds can be processed into biofuel, a form of green energy. The initiative, he added, would also align with the Sustainable Development Goals by promoting access to affordable, reliable and sustainable energy.
Kikon also highlighted on racial discrimination faced by the Northeastern people in mainland India. He stated that the sentiments of the August House against racism should be expressed loudly and unequivocally.
