Zeliang, as the Chief Host; Chairman, Mbaupunggwa Lui Council, Igumchu, as Co-Host; and Deputy Commissioner, Peren, Hiazu Meru, as the Guest of Honour.
Addressing the gathering, Metsubo Jamir expressed gratitude to the Deputy Chief Minister for the invitation and extended warm greetings to all present. He described Hega as one of the most cherished festivals of the Zeliang community and lauded the people of Mbaupunggwa village for preserving their rich cultural heritage. He acknowledged the contributions of the Zeliangrong community in upholding indigenous customs, promoting unity among Naga tribes, and strengthening peaceful coexistence.
Paying tribute to the sons and daughters of the land, he recognised their sacrifices for the greater good of the Naga people. He further appreciated the Zeliangrong community for maintaining their identity despite geographical divisions while upholding unity and oneness, terming it an inspiration to other Naga tribes. Referring to Nagaland as the “Land of Festivals,” he noted the unique cultural significance of Hega.
Jamir also urged the community to remain united, value their blessings, and avoid comparisons. Expressing concern over the low participation of youth at the event, he stressed the importance of preserving language, culture, and traditions by encouraging greater involvement of the younger generation. On the occasion, he announced that, in response to a request from the community, his department would take up the construction of a Community Building for Mbaupunggwa village along with the establishment of a major Farmers’ Market.
Speaking at the programme, Deputy Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang elaborated on how the Hega Festival was traditionally celebrated by the Mbaupunggwa villagers and highlighted its meaning and significance. While speaking on the significance of festivals, Deputy Commissioner Hiazu Meru stated that festivals play a vital role in promoting unity, harmony, and happiness in society while strengthening bonds within families and communities. He described festivals as a “living museum” that preserves culture, traditions, and artistic heritage, and contributes to mental well-being and economic activity.
Highlighting their relevance, he pointed out the close connection between festivals, nature, and agriculture, especially among the Nagas, where celebrations are linked to seasons and harvest cycles. He termed festivals a “universal language” that unites communities. Expressing concern over increasing digital engagement, he observed that such gatherings help foster social cohesion and urged citizens to prioritise the collective development of Peren district over individual or village interests.
DC, Hiazu Meru while speaking at the programme raised concern over the rising sale of land in villages and suggested consultation with tribal hohos on such matters. He further highlighted the importance of tribal institutions and elaborated on the provisions of the Nagaland Village and Tribal Council Act, 1978.
The programme was chaired by Namsungbeu Teilia and Nchibamneu Siarau, followed by a welcome address delivered by Chairman (MLBC) and Joint Director, IPR, Igwanglia Simon Teilia.
Highlights of the event included folk song performances by Ramkia and Ramdi, and a folk dance presented by Mbaupunggwa village. The vote of thanks was proposed by Vice President (COB), NPF, Hupun Zeliang. The programme concluded with Ruangdi celebrations.
