Marking World Environment Day 2026, the Municipal Affairs Department organised Waste-to-Resource Exchange - a step towards circular economy programme at the Secretariat Plaza, Nagaland Civil Secretariat, Kohima, under the theme "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future" on 5 June 2026.
The programme was organised to promote sustainable waste management practices and strengthen public awareness on environmental conservation through resource recovery and recycling. The initiative encouraged government departments and individuals to participate in responsible waste disposal while supporting the transition towards a circular economy.
As part of the programme, government departments exchanged e-waste generated in their offices for coloured waste bins to encourage waste segregation and proper disposal practices. Members of the public were also invited to exchange recyclable plastic waste for reusable shopping bags, promoting alternatives to single-use plastics.
The event witnessed active participation from various Secretariat departments, Directorate offices and individuals. Departments deposited broken and obsolete electronic items, including air conditioners, batteries, chargers and other unused electrical equipment. Individuals contributed recyclable materials such as plastic bottles, cosmetic containers, and other household recyclables.
The Municipal Affairs Department expressed satisfaction over the enthusiastic response and participation from both government departments and employees. The Department noted that such initiatives not only help reduce waste and promote recycling but also foster environmental responsibility and climate-conscious practices among citizens.
The Waste-to-Resource Exchange Programme forms part of the Department's continued efforts to encourage sustainable living and collective action towards building a cleaner, greener and more resilient future. The department further informed that e-waste collected during the programme will be handed over to e-CIRCLE for proper recycling and environmentally sound disposal.
