In a spirited observance of World Environment Day, the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) conducted a flagging-off programme under the global theme "Ending Plastic Pollution" at the iconic Clock Tower Dimapur on 5th of June 2025.
In a clarion call on World Environment Day, MLA and Advisor for Labour & Employment, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship and Excise Department, Moatoshi Longkumer graced the event as the special guest, where he urged the citizens of Dimapur to take collective action in protecting the planet, highlighting plastic pollution as the most pressing environmental issue in Nagaland.
Speaking at the event, Moatoshi emphasized that the biggest threat to Dimapur’s environment is the uncontrolled use of plastic, which continues to flood the city’s garbage system despite widespread awareness. “We always say no to plastic, but we still use plastic every day. This is a contradiction we must overcome,” he stated.
Stressing the global urgency to safeguard Earth, he said, “It is a global call for us to protect this planet. We have gathered here today for a specific purpose — to create a cleaner, greener Dimapur and said each and every citizen must participate.”
He called upon residents, institutions, and businesses to stop using plastic and actively joined the movement to transform Dimapur into a plastic-free zone. He also appealed to civil society bodies, youths and community leaders to become change-makers and lead by example. He also emphasized the government's ongoing initiatives to tackle environmental challenges and urged citizens to play an active role in ending plastic pollution. He also formally flagged off the campaign
The welcome address was delivered by Hukheto Yepthomi, Chairperson of DMC, who highlighted the critical need for collective efforts in reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable practices in the city.
In the programme, Thungchanbemo Tungoe, CEO of DMC, served as the Chairperson, an invocation by Dr. Yilobemo Humtsoe, Senior Pastor of LBC Seitheke Basa and vote of thanks was delivered by Imlinaro Stephanie Ezung, Deputy Chairperson of DMC, who expressed gratitude to all the dignitaries, officials, and participants for their commitment to environmental sustainability.
