ATMA Kohima, in association with State Agricultural Management & Extension Training Institute (SAMETI) Nagaland & National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE) Organized a training programme on “Poultry Rearing & Management” under Skill Training of Rural Youth (STRY) scheme under sub-mission on Agriculture Extension (SMAE) of National Mission on Agricultural Extension Technology (NMAET) of Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, India from 20th -25th September 2021 at conference hall, Chief Veterinary’s Office, Kohima .
During the training programme, Deputy PD, ATMA Kohima, Dr. Keviu Shuya, deliberated on the aims of the training programme which is to impart skill-based training to rural youths to promote employment and creation of skilled manpower. Farm manager, CVO Kohima Dr. Thepfudi Shuya and BTM Tseminyu block, Dr. Vibeilie Keretsü were the resource persons for the training programme.
Training the youths from their vast experiences of working in animal husbandry sector and extension agency, a thorough and detailed teaching inclusive of both theoretical and practical demonstrations were imparted to the participants. Selection of different poultry birds based on the purpose it is used for is vital in poultry rearing. Breeds like broiler is reared for meat products, layer for egg production and kuroiler for both egg and meat purposes. Citing examples of successful farmers in backyard poultry farming, the resource persons beckoned that good management practices becomes the key towards successful poultry farming. Following proper housing specifications, proper feeding and drinking water practices, keeping the coop clean, dry, free from odour with appropriate bedding materials and temperature regulation are some aspects under management. Various biosecurity measures and some common diseases such as Ranikhet, Protozoan and bacterial infections were also taught. Subjects on the economics of poultry farming and nutrition were also taken up during the training programme. Demonstrations were conducted during farm visit to the State Poultry Farm. A self-assessment test for the participants was also conducted at the end of the training programme.
The valedictory programme concluded with a vote of thanks from Deputy PD ATMA, Rokoshuno Angela and distribution of the training certificates. Altogether, 20 youths benefited from the training.
