Nagaland's climate tells a different story in every district. While some regions receive abundant monsoon rainfall, others experience comparatively drier conditions, highlighting the state's diverse weather patterns. The Meteorological Report of Nagaland 2025, published by the Directorate of Soil and Water Conservation, provides a comprehensive overview of these changing climatic trends and their implications across the state.

Among the meteorological observatories, Sechü recorded the highest annual rainfall at 2,901.2 mm, while Meluri received the lowest. Dimapur emerged as the hottest station, with temperatures reaching 34°C during June and July. In contrast, the higher-altitude districts experienced comparatively cooler temperatures throughout the year.

As in previous years, the southwest monsoon remained the primary source of rainfall, with July to September recording the heaviest precipitation across most districts. Bhandari registered 1,507.2 mm of rainfall over 99 rainy days, with September emerging as its wettest month. Historical records further indicate that rainfall has fluctuated significantly over the past decade, reflecting increasing climate variability across Nagaland.

The report highlights that these changing weather patterns have direct implications for agriculture, water resources, infrastructure and disaster management. Reliable meteorological data enables farmers to plan cropping seasons more effectively, supports authorities in preparing for floods and landslides, and strengthens long-term conservation and water management efforts.

The report also highlights the growing impact of climate-related disasters across the state. During 2024–25, incidents of windstorms, cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides resulted in casualties, damaged roads, disrupted water supply systems, affected livestock and poultry, and caused damage to government schools and irrigation infrastructure. These events demonstrate the increasing vulnerability of essential public infrastructure and rural livelihoods to extreme weather conditions.

According to the report, improved disaster preparedness, early warning systems, climate-resilient infrastructure and sustainable resource management are becoming increasingly important as extreme weather events become more frequent.

More than a collection of weather statistics, the Meteorological Report of Nagaland 2025 serves as an important reminder that understanding local climate trends is essential for building resilience in the face of climate change. As rainfall patterns, temperatures and seasonal cycles continue to evolve, reliable meteorological information will remain a critical tool for informed planning, environmental conservation and safeguarding livelihoods across Nagaland.
