In an order issued by Commissioner of Police and District Magistrate, Dimapur on 26th September 2024, the Gau Dhwaj Yatra, (promotion of a ban on cow slaughter), has been prohibited in the districts of Dimapur, Chumoukidema, and Niuland.

The order comes in pursuance of the State Government’s directive dated 12th September 2024, citing concerns over potential disturbances to public order. The prohibition is further reinforced by the provisions contained in para (1) (a) (i) of Aticle 371(A) of the Constitution of India, which grants special safeguards to Nagaland, particularly in matters related to religious and social practices.
